Well that may be true if you live in Baghdad or Dufar but just shooting at someone in America generally does not require Sharpshooter status...

I can agree that learning to shoot for self defense may be a good reason but to shoot like a seal or swat member please!!!
You have no clue what you are talking about do you.

The websight was talking about self defense training as well and some of the same things they teach Navy Seals are things they teach in some self defense classes like how to disarm an attacker, proper and quick sight acquisition in high stress situations during an attack as they teach the Seals, point of aim, etc. It is not shooting a rifle at 300 yards for self defence training or "sharpshooter status" like a SWAT member as you put it, get real.

Let me rephrase then- no reason for a kid today in the US to bring a gun into school. Even the guys I knew in HS who hunted left them well concealed in their trucks.
Well first of all not all students could afford trucks, but that aside I see what you mean about currently. I think they should bring back marksmanship classes though.

In Vermont a 16 year old can bring a handgun on school property, but they cannot bring it into a school building. If a kid in Vermont has a reason they feel they need to do so, I think there is not reason not to let them.

Having those guns in their trucks on school property would now be a felony offense.. but as we know law abiding citizens don't bring guns on campus anymore, only criminals intent on killing someone do.

But what reason would a kid have to bring a gun to school?

Guns are not toys. Minors do not need to be toting them around outside of a shooting range or hunting trip. They are not mature enough to do so. They need adult supervision.
And how about the teachers and staff? Should they be allowed to carry on campus to protect themselves as well as our kids??

If you have a family, and have guns in your house, I would think you'd want be as accurate and as proficient in the use of that gun(s) as humanly possible.. You wouldn't want to miss your intended target would you?

Being proficient and accurate is the key to safe gun handling.. AND self defense. You can't expect to teach someone how to load it, clean it, and send them on their way.

Maybe we should take away all the guns and just give everyone Knives or Bows and Arrows... Maybe 1 person dies but after that the other kids will probably pummel the attacker..:sarcasm:

I know guns are our constitutional rights... I was kidding...a little

From Wikipedia:

Myrick, the assistant principal, was a former Army Officer and had a valid Concealed Pistol License, authorizing him to carry a handgun; however, due to the law, Myrick was not allowed to carry his pistol while on school property. When Woodham began shooting in the school, Myrick ran over 1/4 mile to his truck to retrieve his weapon. He then sprinted back to the school, where he confronted Woodham.

Today Mr Myrick would go to jail, because his truck and his gun are on school grounds or within 'X' amount of feet of the Gun Free School Zone..

The federal law says 1000 feet, but the first version was ruled unconstitutional by the SC and the second version is not enforced because there is serious doubt the second version is Constitutional as well.

In places like Vermont it is legal to carry on school property, but not in the school buildings.

There is an exception in the federal law for people licensed by the state to be within 1000 feet as well as I understand it.

I got a new 12 gauge yesterday and put some #4's down range on my plate rack at about 85 yards. A couple pellets did hit the bowling pin sized target I was aiming at. It wouldn't kill a dove but I still am not going to stand there and test it. Damn sure not a 9mm from a handgun or an 'assault' rifle.
Are we talking yards or Feet ? 1yrd = 3 feet ?

Larry that seems a bit far for a shotgun ?

Schools used to have rifle marksmanship clubs and classes and also a lot of kids back in the old days would go hunting after school, especially out in the country.
My wife was on the Rifle Team @ Montgomery Blair HS ( old bldg ) and graduated in 84 .............
