The FN Five-seveN® is marketed as a revolutionary weapon that will defeat the enemy. But, if you're the enemy and you find yourself on the wrong side of this weapon, aside from your gun-fighting skills, you are completely vulnerable with or without your armor.
According to the FN HERSTAL website, anyone wearing body armor can be effectively engaged, and Kevlar® helmets and vests as well as the CRISAT protection will be penetrated. The Five-seveN® has high stopping power firing a 5.7x28mm SS190 Ball round. This bullet can perforate 48 layers of Kevlar from 50 meters out. It has a very low recoil impulse (60% of the recoil impulse of a 9mm) offering virtually no muzzle climb and resulting in more controllability.
Made in Belgium, this is a powerful and highly effective weapon (It's listed muzzle velocity is 2700 fps). However, this round is now available on the open market in handguns. A quick "Google" search is all it takes to find one. Any weapon that falls into the wrong hands is a deadly threat to officers, but, this particular device WILL PENETRATE YOUR ARMOR.
"Because it is now accessible to the civilian public, we must be familiar with it," says Calibre Press Lead Instructor Dave Smith (a.k.a. Buck Savage).
"The bad news is that it can penetrate armor. The good news is, according to Marvin L. Fackler, MD, FACS, President, Int'l Wound Ballistics Association, it doesn't deliver its energy to its target very well," Smith adds.
Nevertheless, it is VERY important that you know this weapon and how it functions so you can recognize it on the street. If you do encounter a subject with this gun, remember its capabilities and adjust your response accordingly.
