CSM Weather Damage Leads to Cancellation of CSM’s Annual Renaissance Festival

The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) regrets to announce that the college’s annual Renaissance Festival held at the La Plata Campus is canceled this year. Originally slated to occur May 3, 2019, the festival was canceled due to recent weather-related damage.

“We were well into the process of setting up the very large tents for the event when the high winds and severe weather swept through La Plata overnight April 15,” explained CSM Chair/Professor Dr. Stephen Johnson. “The high winds ripped the tent, bent the poles and damaged some outdoor electrical connections. There just isn’t enough time for us to replace the necessary infrastructure.”

However, still occurring that weekend is CSM’s rousing production of “Pippin,” which opens the weekend of April 25-27.

In Pippin’s world, the Band of Players has “Magic to Do.” Don’t miss the College of Southern Maryland’s production of “Pippin” and see how happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but often in the magic and music of every day.

With an infectiously unforgettable score from four-time Grammy winner, three-time Oscar winner and musical theater giant, Stephen Schwartz, “Pippin” is the story of one young man’s journey to be extraordinary. Winner of four 2013 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, this updated circus-inspired version of “Pippin” continues to captivate and appeal to the young at heart throughout the world.

Heir to the Frankish throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment. He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield, the temptations of the flesh and the intrigues of political power (after disposing of his father, King Charlemagne the Great).

Performances are Thursday, April 25 at 7:30 p.m.; Friday, April 26 at 8 p.m. and Saturday, April 27 at 8 p.m.; and Thursday, May 2 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, May 4 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, May 5 at 2 p.m. at the La Plata Campus, in The Brad and Linda Gottfried Theater in the Fine Arts Center, located at 8730 Mitchell Road.
