If I lea a five gallon bucket outside for a week can I rightly assume that the number of inches in the bucket is the number of inches that we’ve gotten in that week? If so we’ve had over 14” of rain in a week.

That is mostly correct, as long as the bucket has no taper, and is not under an eve or tree but in the open. But 14” seems a bit much for the last week. I’ve only had about 3.5” since May 1st. Did someone pee in your bucket or pour water in it?

The bucket just had old food in it that was dumped in the compost and the bucket left out, not under the eaves / trees just in the wide open. If it had had 8-10” I wouldn’t thought anything of it, but it had a lot more.
