web pages

But wait, there's more...
Alright ... this is frustrating the heck outta me. I have a 19-inch monitor. I'm designing pages. When they come up on a normal sized monitor (15"), they have a scroll thing along the bottom.

How do I set the page settings to "autofit" in the particular window for the computer that pulls it up?

Also, would I be easier off designing the pages in something Microsoft Word or stick with Macromedia Contribute? This stuff is kickin' my azz. :frown:

What's the resolution of the monitor? I design my pages to fit on an 800x600 screen. To play it safe, I use a design table with a width of 750px. Macromedia Dreamweaver lists an 800x600 monitor as showing 760x420 of content area in the browser window.

If you need to design for 640x480, the browser only can show 600x300.

Browsers are always set to autofit.

Also, it's not the screen size (19" vs. 15") that's changing, so much as the screen resolution (1024x768 vs. 800x600) that's gotcha.

Now, if you're getting a scrollbar, then you've added tables, or frames or something, and you are forcing at least one cell or column to be at least a specific width.

If you're going to do this, you're going to have to do one of two things - go to the lowest common denominator: 640x480 (eesh), or accept the fact that some people are going to get scrollbars.

Best designing tool for webpages: Notepad.

If you want color coded HTML tags and such, try Crimson Editor.

Good stuff, Toxick. I use a combination of Dreamweaver and hand-coding. I've also used Microsoft FrontPage for site management. At home I use HTML Kit.

Sorry about that chief.
In Dreamweaver if you're using tables:

1. Right click on the table go to Table - Select Table
2. Go to the top toolbar: Modify - Table - Convert width to Percent

I've been redoing webpages for the last two weeks, I know that drill by heart!

Haven't heard of HTML kit.

One of the reasons I stumbled across Crimson Editor, was when I was designing a PHP editor. I got it working and it was cool, but I mix PHP in with HTML, and my editor didn't distinguish between the two - so my HTML was PHP color-coded.

I love that program, and I use it for all my development, including Perl, ASP, XML - all of 'em.

Great stuff.

Cool!

I know it's a big accomplishment. I remember when I converted plain text into something more the first time.
