I would suggest contacting either your bridal gown shop or the place you are planning to hold your reception and see who they recommend.
I've helped plan dozens of weddings - gratis for family and friends - so you may be correct. Most people would want a certificed planner though and I can't afford the "certification" process. That she needs a wedding planner suggests to me that she may need someone to make those calls for her..
Though I like your suggestion of a wide open field for a wedding.. a missed calling perhaps??

check out somdweddings.com for the directory. They will be credible contacts, but interview them and see. BY FAR, the one I have had exposure with that is the best is Mary Rahall. Also owns Waldorf Engraving and Invitations. Most others are out of their element and the facility usually ends up correcting their mistakes because they don't have experience.
Good Luck!
My bff used her back in 2005 (for invitations and planning) and she was amazing. I know that my friend definitely had a solid idea of how she wanted the ceremony/reception to be, and Mary ran with it. She was indespensible during the reception, acting as a liason between all the vendors and handling any hiccups quickly. As Maid of Honor, I spent a lot of time with her that day and she was really friendly and definitely on the ball.check out somdweddings.com for the directory.
