Weight Loss

A friend of mine is moving out of state soon and didn't know what to do with his cat. I now have a cat :howdy:
We (the old owner and I) took him to the vet together to get him up-to-date on his shots and a health checkup. The cat weighs 25.12 pounds.
The vet suggested taking him off of the dry food. (He was eating Science Diet Light) and putting him on wet food. She said wet food makes them feel fuller and they'll eat less.
This cat isn't big into meals; he likes to snack, around 3 bites at a time, a few times a day. I'm trying to get him on a schedule with the wet food and not have food available all the time for him.
Wet food comes in 3 oz. servings and I'm not sure whether to feed him 2 or 3 times a day. I was going to do 2 but he seems to be really hungry in the early evening. The back of the package says 1 oz. for every pound which seems a little outrageous, considering his weight.
Has anyone here been successful at getting a cat to lose weight and how?

Oh and the old owner was a single male, likes to play on his computer so their lifestyle was sedentary. Here I have 2 kids, 2 dogs and myself, I think this will help a lot!!!

I just got my cats to lose weight. They wouldn't eat any of the light foods so I just gave them the regular. I used a 1/4c measuring cup and filled that with dry food to 1/8 in. beneath the top and gave that to each 2x a day.

They each lost about 5lbs in about a month. I gave them some wet food as a treat once a week.

It's not good to let them lose weight too fast. I let my cat have access to her Iams hairball formula dry all day but would feed her Iams weight control canned in the morning. She lost a few pounds over the next month or so. She now looks good. Her tummy goes in just a little just before her hips and you can't feel any bones on her. Doc says she's at a good weight now. Also playing with them more helps with the weight loss. Get some feather wands or just some string. My daughter tied some yarn and a feather together then tied it to her belt loop and walked around dragging it behind her. She had a circus of cats bouncing around behind her as she walked around the house, it was hilarious! Good Luck! :howdy:
