St. Mary's Co. Went to the Ruddy Duck in St Georges Island

My wife and I took her dad out for a birthday dinner and let him choose the restaurant. He chose the Ruddy Duck at St Georges Island. The food was okay but the service was awful. We had to ask for utensils for the table and didn't get any until AFTER our appetizer was served. 3 of us drank only water and our glasses were never refilled (Or even offered) until our meal was complete. Only then did our waitress bring a bottle of warm water. Of course, all of our ice was melted away so all we had was warm water to drink. After dinner, the waitress brought out a piece of chocolate cake and 4 forks. I thought this was a nice gesture as many restaurants offer a free dessert on birthdays. We never ordered the dessert but she did bring it out. To my amazement, there was an $8.00 line item on the bill for this dessert. The manager quickly removed it from the bill but I was stunned none the less. I don't think I'll ever return to the Ruddy Duck on St Georges Island. Its not worth the time it takes to get there! Thoughts?

I've never had anything but the best service. Took my dad there last week and the waitress couldn't do enough for us.

Sounds like maybe a new hire?

The Duck staff in Lusby is stellar, but I don't think they get the cream of the crop on SGI because it's so far off the beaten path. I can't think of a time I had good service there, but the waterfront setting makes up for it, so... 🤷

They used to have an app called Calamari Fries, which were thick cut planks of calamari rolled in crumbs and deep fried. It was the best thing on Earth, but labor-intensive so they stopped offering it.

:yeahthat: Those were the BOMB. :dye:I went once after they stopped offering them. The food was mediocre and service severely lacking, so I stopped going there.

We gave up on the SGI RD after about four visists. While there were high points, the lack of beer choice and inconsitent food quality and service sealed the deal. Seemd like they could never get all aspects to line up. If I want Ruddy Duck, I'll do Solomons. If I want waterfront, I'll hit Island Hideaway or Ftizies.

IMHO two entirely different restaurants. Different menu and I would say culture. The Solomons / Lusby location is about the pizza and beer - the brewery. I would describe it as a brew pub. Sure, they have other items on the menu, but that was the core. Not sure what the SGI location is.

Seems to be more appreciated for the "waterfront hangout" aspect. They do stay busy these days and parking gets pretty scarce.

We seldom eat there..wife not a big fan of most of what's on their menu..but I do take clients there on occasion since its so close to our office. Was in there back in Feb and place was crowded but both food and service were fine. Not the first time I've heard complaints like OP's though...leading me to believe it's a hit and miss issue with the quality of some staff.

I've always heard much of the food at SGI is prepped at the Lusby location because the kitchen is so small.

We ate there last night and they have taken lot off the menu including the salad I love and had intended to get. Though the server was attentive, the food was meh and I can say I won't be rushing back there any time soon. 😞

Solomons or SGI location?

When I first was there I met Carlos, didn't realize he had a partner, Michael Kelley, in the business.
That was before they took over SGI location.
Sad to see a personal favorite leave the menu, but that's a business decision. What I think hurts more is when the food becomes so so.
When the quality starts to slide, that's a sign the restaurant is not going to be around unless there is a course correction.
a little double-entendre there.
