The zoo, which is right next to my resort, had a fire and lost 6 lemurs. Three remained with injuries so now everybody in town, including the snowbirds and summer regulars, is monitoring their progress. Today the zoo put out word that the last lemur that had to be hospitalized is showing great improvement and will be going home, where she will be secluded and monitored.
Big house fire, humans die, everyone is, "Oh, that's too bad....anyway..." But let lemurs die and there's a city-wide mourning and vigil for the survivors. I mean, not really because this is a compassionate community and if there's a tragedy folks here are on it offering help (very much like St. Mary's and Calvert, so I know you all get it) but this fire has generated more involvement than usual.
It's like movies. Watching one of the Jurassic Park movies, humans are getting eaten left and right and the audience sits there, but when the dog gets eaten literally the whole theater reacted. "Awwww!" "Oh no!"
