1 Corinthians 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written:
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”
20 Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. 22 Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24 but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
26 Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”
I got these statements from the commentary. “Their idolatry was that they now had God completely figured out; he would simply repeat the Exodus, in still greater splendor.”
“Their idolatry was to conceive of God as ultimate Reason, meaning of course what we deem to be reasonable.”
The Jews figure the True Messiah will arrive with an army of Angels and wipe the world clean of anyone who doesn't have Jewish DNA. Won't they be surprised when they see me in the crowd.... lol. The Greeks figure the True Messiah will look like them and act like them and stand out in every great debate. I've heard a lot of talk about "black Jesus" lately. By lately I mean I've heard it in the last couple years. I never considered the "color" of Jesus until I heard those words linked. What if Jesus showed up, and people rejected Him because He didn't have the right number of perfect freckles on His nose? Would the Greeks be able to debate Him away? Does this all seem ridiculous? Well, that's what Paul is saying. Stop trying to make sense of God. Stop trying to figure out God's Plan. It just makes us look even more ignorant than we are! God knows how it turns out.
If Jesus showed up in a spacecraft, would you join Him? Or would you turn away because your God wouldn't bother with a spacecraft?
As we read on, we'll see people in the Christian Church whom we would not allow in our churches today. The Christian Church back in the days of Paul and Peter, couldn't hoist a cross on the roof of the building. They had to hide. They met in the homes of fellow Christians. They met in brothels. They met in secret because if the authorities found out.... they would be murdered. Today... People are being run out of the church because they don't dress right or smell right! The "Christians" of today have God all figured out. God will let them know what He has planned so they can mark it on their calendar.
If Jesus showed up in a Chevy Truck would the people turn Him away because they are waiting for a Lincoln Towncar?
We're so ignorant!!!
