Westboro Baptist Protests Slain Priest's Funeral

Well, that makes no sense, whatsoever, at all, period. It never made sense that they protested at soldiers funerals, but this is just over the top. What are they trying to prove? IMO, they are not religious. They are disguising themselves as religious, but, obviously, have another agenda Otherwise, it makes no sense at all. How sad, and disheartening that we live amongst these type of people. What a violation of grief and death. Do they not find themselves immoral for what they do? Rhetorical question. I hope they burn.

"Members of the Westboro Baptist Church are known for picketing funerals, particularly those of soldiers. According to their website, group members believe God is punishing America through war due to the country’s immoral society."

They are very religious. They so religious that they are fanatical about what they believe. I would question whether they are Christians; but certainly they are religious.

And given their fanaticism, what they do doesn’t surprise me.

I would argue, have argued, they are fundamentalists. Literalistic. Old Testament types. Fanaticism is the behavior of the unthinking, un critical. These folks are devout and know exactly why they believe as they do. They, like their Muslim counterparts that we insist on labeling as 'extremists' and 'fanatics' believe in an angry, vengeful god. That is the God of their holy books. A fanatic will support their position in the face of any evidence to the contrary, will make any excuse. The devout and fundamental just believe. Serenely, deeply.

Consider. Westerboro believes God hates fags. They also believe God hates our soldiers because, in their view they are fighting to preserve a land that does not properly, in their view, hate fags.

In any event, I only argue this because when we dismiss people as 'fanatics' or 'extremists' we, in the process, throw out the means and understanding to beat them.

Could you not make the same argument against Islamic extremists?

I know it's perfectly ok to lump all muslims into one big ball of terrorism, but replace "Christians" with "Muslims", and it's the same argument. The argument that no one seems to acknowledge when it comes to Christians.

Not even close. They are lawyers and parasites and everything they do is calculated. They are like Sean Hannity or Keith Olbermann on steroids in a church setting drumming up righteous indignation in order to provoke and sue people. Rinse and repeat.

They are not extremists. They are fundamentalists. It is not extreme to be devout. Most people don't take their faith very literally so, we call those who do 'extreme' to make ourselves feel better about it. Imagine if we called mathematicians 'extremists' for insisting 1 + 1 = 2.

Does that make them wrong? You just made the case in the other thread that God will take life as he sees fit. Westerboro, calculating lawyers or no, are arguing in favor of the God who wiped out Sodom and Gomorrah and for the same reasons. Aren't they?

They are arguing in favor of a god who hates people. The bible is clear, God is angry about sin, because He is holy and will judge accordingly and justly (the offense of sin against God's holiness demands death). The bible is equally clear that God loves everyone in the world, wants them to not sin, but because they do sin, sent His Son to atone for it all.

"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13 ESV

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 ESV

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. 1 John 3:16a ESV

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!

This is the message WBC misses. This is their error.

The picketing funerals part is also error, as it ignores a direct command from the Apostle Paul: Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Romans 12:15 NIV

yeah. And those are the people they are arguing God hates. They are arguing in favor of a wrathful God that punishes the unfaithful. There were mourners in Sodom and God smote them all and let...uh...Him sort them out...I guess...

They say; God hates soldiers because God hates fags and soldiers are fighting to make the world safe for fags.
