Charles Co. Westlake named overall high school math team winner

Westlake High School won the 2018-19 High School Math Team competition. High school math teams compete in monthly challenges by completing a series of individual, team and relay questions. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) high school math teams recently completed the competition season with Westlake High School earning a first-place overall award. High school math teams compete in monthly challenges by completing a series of individual, team and relay questions. Scores accumulate during the year to determine an overall Charles County champion.

Westlake’s team earned a total of 162 points, with North Point High School earning second place with 147 points followed by the team from Henry E. Lackey High School in third place with 142 points. Three students earned honors for their individual performance. They are Westlake seniors Migue Darcera and Megan Carr, and North Point senior Andrew Fan.

Westlake’s winning team is sponsored by math teacher Paul Kanterman and includes seniors Megan Carr, Migue Darcera, Waliullah Ghori, Nadjia Haskins, Kevin Hughley, Andre Jackson, Amaya Nelson, Krisha Patel, Raven Ragland, Jamel Raiford, Courtney Schaefer, Adrianna Willis and Brianna Wilson, juniors Maurice Anderson, Kenni Bell, Jordan Bellamy, Desean Bennett, Gillian Gibson, Hailey Kolberg, Nneoma Udoji and Eleni Varlas, and sophomore Abdullah Shahzad.

Overall results are:

  • Westlake, first place, 162 points;
  • North Point, second place, 147 points;
  • Lackey, third place, 142 points;
  • La Plata High School, 130 points; and
  • Maurice J. McDonough High School, 123 points.
Monthly results are:

  • November – Westlake, 29 points;
  • December – La Plata and McDonough, 30 points;
  • January – Lackey, 41 points;
  • February – Westlake, 29 points; and
  • March – Lackey, 37 points.
