Westlake out of playoffs?

What really gets me is that they still get to play in the first round of the playoffs, but if found to be in violation, Potomac will advance regardless of Friday's outcome. Really not fair to other teams that may have made the playoffs if their games against Westlake were ruled forfeits.

This is very irritating!!!! Chopticon would be in the playoffs if this is true. GRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!! My question is why would a "formal" complaint have to be filed?? If the MPPSSA heard of this situation earlier in the year then they should have taken actions then not know. Politics run this country way too much, most state/local/fed agencies don't have the marbles to do whats right!!!

I was trying to figure this out too. It seems a letter was sent at the beginning of the season. The media was"informed", as where the powers that should have done something. They waited until the end of the season to give Westlake 5 days to present their case, have a "hearing" (?) - on Monday after the playoff game.

BTW - the Patuxent player who was ineligible, played three games, yet they only forfeited two?

I'm interpreting the article as if Zaccerelli turned over the information to the Athletic Supervisor in Charles County earlier in the season. Whether or not the Supervisor turned the information over to Sparks and the MPSSAA immediately or just recently is what I'm questioning...

Has anyone heard the outcome of the hearing today? Westlake won Friday night, but if they determine the player ineligible, Potomac forges ahead. I heard it through the grapevine over the weekend that the ineligible player was a kid that was playing out of district.

Westlake will play its next playoff game. They have to forfeit the two games the ineligible played in so there record is 6-4 for the year.

Even with the forfeit they still had enough points to stay ahead of Potomac. So Westlake advances.

See Link.

Westlake guilty of using ineligible player but still alive in playoffs

The MPSSAA really needs to do something about this. This is the 3rd straight year that come playoff time teams have had to forfeit games due to the use of ineligible players. Pax and Westlake this year, Gwynn Park and Friendly last year, and Lackey the year before.

I think these teams should be punished the following year as well. A 1 yr suspension from the MD State playoffs.

As for Westlake only having to forfeit 2 games....isn't it strange that they only had to forfeit the exact amount they needed to still be eligble for the playoffs???? And by somehow the player didn't play against Chopticon (who finished in 5th place looking in to grab a playoff berth)?

When Lackey was caught 2 years ago they were the #1 seed. It came out the Tuesday before the playoff game so they only had to play a road game at Chopticon. But by some miracle they only had to forfeit 2 games which kept them just above the team on the outside looking in.

To me it seems the Charles Co. Public Schools isn'tholding their coaches and schools to a higher standard. Seems a bit fishy to me. Friendly and Gwynn Park both forfeited all their games because of the ineligible player they played!

I plan to write a letter to MPSSAA expresses my discontent with this matter and how I think they should look into suspending the school from the playoffs he following year. I urge anyone that feels this is unfair to do the same.

Interesting that you picked up on that. The WashPost noted it in an article also.
Must have been a good player: They lost 46 - 0 to Huntingtown.

Well its because this situation is very similar to the Lackey incident from 2 years ago. And Charles county dropped the ball on that incident also IMHO. Same scenario happened Lackey forfeited 2 games which moved them from the #1 seed to what would of been #4. But this came out on the Wednesday before its 1st round match up against Chopticon. So they moved the game to Chopticon because it was too late to change the playoff match ups.

So this is twice that the Charles County Public School system keep a team in the playoffs that were caught cheating.

When Friendly and Gwynn Park used ineligible players they forfeited every game!!

Makes me question the integretity of Charles County. I could get my hands on a film from Westlake vs. Chopticon from the first week of the season. I would love to know the jersey number of the ineligible player, because if they would of had to forfeit that game Westlake would of been out of the playoffs and Chopticon would have been in.

And by the way it was known that Westlake played an ineligible player the same time the Patuxent scenario arose. Calvert reacted to the situation promptly, Charles waited until the season ended.

Whatever Westlake may or may not have done doesn't matter now -- a 46-0 Huntingtown beatdown really makes a statement. One player won't make a 46 point difference.
