I had to run some errands to VA this morning. On the way back I took a detour and stopped at Westmoreland State Park. I had been considering staying at this park for a few days but really knew nothing about it. A former forum member APS (RIP, buddy...) stayed there more than a few times and had nothing but good to say about it, so I needed to look into it.
I was impressed. It's not huge, but full of things to do, family oriented. It can accommodate camping from tents to full size motorhomes and has cabins for those who don't want to really rough it. Also have group camping area for up to 40 people. A beach on the Potomac, swimming pool, activity and discovery center, fossil hunting, boat ramp, trails, kayak and paddle board rentals.... Some of the cabins are on a bluff overlooking the Potomac, and the view is incredible.
It was pretty quiet, I guess most everyone who had stayed the weekend had already pulled out. The sites were well built and clean. No litter anywhere, which was surprising for the tail end of Labor Day weekend. I found a site or two that are protected but have great southern exposure (thinking solar panels.....).
There were no stores on Rt 3 between King George and the park, so you'd want to have all your supplies before getting there. The birthplaces of James Monroe and George Washington are nearby.
So now just have to get my act together and get down there.
