Amazon has decided that however many trillions just isn't enough money for them, so they've decided to sell ads in their Prime video. Oh, and if you want to opt out of ads it will cost you an additional $2.99/mo.

We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience. Starting January 29, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month* that you can sign up for here.

Same stunt Hulu pulled not so long ago.

Do you watch prime video though? Every few months I try, then the UI drives me nuts and I quit. I understand they have some decent shows, but I hate the way their service works. If I search for something on a "paid" streaming service, the first 10 results should not be crap that costs extra or is on some other channel that I would have to pay to add-on to my service. Show me what's available in the service I pay for first, and if nothing matches then at the very bottom show me what I can pay extra for (or don't show it at all).

The only reason we even have prime is for the shipping, I hate all the extra crap they bundle in and force us to pay for. I am tempted to cancel it, but we manage to buy enough crap that the extra couple percent on the Amazon visa for being a prime member ends up paying for itself. I understand a lot of the "free" shipping cost is baked into the price, but everything I buy is either cheaper than I can get locally or damn close and easier than making a special trip across town to pick it up.

See, I don't buy all that much from Amazon so I'm tempted to cancel. I'll have to add up my purchases and see if it's still worth it. They get me for a Kindle subscription too.

On any given year we spend somewhere from 5-8k on amazon depending on if there are any big ticket items (like new TVs, phones, or computers).

I only use the 2% difference over having their card without prime to justify the cost, but I guess if you consider the whole 5% (vs 1-3% you might get with a regular card at a different store) it takes even less to break even.

I’m not an Amazon customer, but can their streaming service be purchased separately from a Prime membership? I know Prime Video is included in a Prime membership, but not sure how it all works.

The thing is, there are only so many potential customers on the planet. And after you get so much market penetration, there are only so many ways to keep revenue streams and profits increasing. Commercials are one way - the most common way. This is the same boiling frog trick that destroyed cable TV.

I think the next couple of years, this streaming market will implode. Until then, maybe Amazon has some good deals on storage for the uptick in piracy that will certainly follow.

Netflix was the only service I used to download movies/shows to my device for long flights. Just dumped them, so now just have crummy IFE.

My printed books don’t have ads. Win.

Remember when they advertised that cable TV would be free from ads?
Yep :lmao:

bamboozled huh?

I have an OTA - and get 4, 5, 7, 9, 20 and 50 and a bunch of other channels 48+/-. Husband has a Monumental Sports & Friendly TV subscription.

How do you get them? External antenna on the roof? Decent reception? That’s the problem for where I’m at - neighbors with HUGE antennas still get crap.

It is external, on the roof and a Channel Master booster. I used the pre-existing wiring in our house when I did it.

Nobody had faith in me that I would actually accomplish my goals but I did. Later, I disconnected all the T'V's except 2, bedroom and living room, which gave me better reception and access to more channels.

I, also, have no kids living here no more. My kids moved out years ago.

I bought one, but I don't get good reception, and I have to aim it at DC to get that. My intention was to tell Breezelines overpriced reception to stick it, but it didn't work satisfactorily to do that.

We live in Mechanicsville. Our signal is lower in the summer but I still get all the channels. Once the leaves fall, I pick up Baltimore and even some stations in Richmond.

Over the summer, I have way better things to do than watch TV anyway. ;)

But for us, we had Direct TV prior to that and it was getting pretty expensive.

My in-laws needed to cut expenses so we put up an OTA for them and since they are just in Charles County, they pick up way more channels and with a full signal. When I upgraded my living room TV, I gave my FIL my Roku TV and he loves it. He watches YT, Pluto, Friendly and I think he got a Paramount Plus subscription so adding the OTA was great for him. He says he is more than happy with the set up and costs now.

Fallout - Official Trailer | Prime Video

That could either be really good or really stupid. I'll set a reminder to find out. :yay: I think Walton Goggins is one of our modern unsung character actors and would watch just for him.

Yet.

I have a Kindle account. I haven't seriously thought about a different book provider, but it may come to that.

Do I Need an Amazon Prime Membership to Use Prime Video?

You do not need to have an Amazon Prime membership to use Prime Video.

Customers are able to purchase or rent a selection of titles from the Prime Video catalog, without needing an Amazon Prime or Prime Video membership.

Purchases from the Prime Video Store are automatically charged to your 1-Click payment method. As soon as the order completes, purchases are available to view in Purchases & Rentals.
