What can you tell me about California?

Hi! :)

My husband was just hired at BAE and starts work on the 26th. We're from out of state and don't know much of anything about the area. I was wondering if you all could fill me in? I'm curious about shopping (What grocery store(s), restaurants, etc. are in California?), schools (We have two young children, 4 & 8, what prek & elementary school would they be going to?), apartments and/or homes for rent in California (Which ones are good & which should we avoid?)

Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks! :)

You have to post your picture and disclose your financial portfolio before people are allowed to answer these very personal questions that you ask.

California, MD is a respectable area IMHO. You have the Wildewood Shopping Center that has groceries, clothing, liquor, restaurants. There are plenty of places to buy or rent in the Wildewood Community as well. The schools are good, but the traffic stinks on Route 235. St. Mary's has built up so much in the past years, yet the area is small, so you wouldn't suffer much travel time if you wanted to venture outside of California. Another bonus, if your husband is working on the base, it's only a few mile commute. I would recommend California in a heartbeat

Oh and the BAE building is just hop, skip and a jump from California...actually it might even be IN California.

Restaraunts...Outback, LoneStar, Applebee's, CheeseBurger in Paradise (coming soon), Five Guys, Petruzzi's (Italian), Ruby Tuesdays...again the area has grown so much, there is just about everything there now. I can't think of them all.

Shopping...JC Penney, Belk..that's all I can think of

Schools...relatively good.

I had good feelings about Park Hall Elementary, but was only so-so on Spring Ridge Middle, and moved rather than let my son spend another year at Great Mills HS.

Most folks will tell you that the schools over in Calvert county are better than St Mary's county, although I couldn't tell you either way.

The shopping opportunities have certainly improved since I moved to SoMD in 2001...but then again, a whole lot of people moved in, housing prices doubled, and money follows money.

Tell your husband good luck with BAE....I started there after I retired from the Navy....and some parts of the company are better than others....I lasted about 14 months, but I definitely wasn't in one of the better parts of the company. I wound up joining SAIC, and wound up having to relocate.

At Christmas when someone offers you some stuffed ham..don't ask what it is, just eat it and hopefully enjoy it. It is a local custom and delicacy.

Shaeffers (sp?) in Tall Timbers? Andy makes the BEST stuffed ham :yay: :yum:
