What cloud service is everyone using for PC?

I'm really bad about doing backups, mainly because the media I use (WD external hard drives and DVDs) don't have the best performance or longevity record.

I have a WD 3 TB HD, but my computer can't read it. It may be formatted to a different file system, but I'm not positive. I think the last time I used it was with a Win7 computer.

I have a DVD that I did a backup on this computer with, but it's years old. I can't remember whether it's read/write or not, but I never had much luck with those.

I actually have a DVD that I backed up a lot of documents from work before I retired. Only personal stuff; nothing work related. Since work was where I spent most of my time, that's where I did a lot of my work that related to LESes, retirement paperwork, security renewal information, finances, taxes, and so on. Again, zero actual work-related stuff. Naturally, I can't remember the password. So there's that.

TIA

I don't trust the cloud to house my personal data.

I switched to an all digital portable storage device for backups, and an all digital HD replacement drive for the PC.

Yeah, I don't trust them with EVERYTHING, although by now, they probably do know what I get up to in the wee hours.

When you get a pop-up message from the NSA that says "we notice you haven't been as active on the porn sites, lately, due to a drop-off in downloaded pictures. Everything okay?"

Thanks. I've already done my research as far as what's available; I was looking for recommendations, and you guys are the smartest guys I know when it comes to computers and all that.

Keep all your information, (personal, business, or otherwise), that is on your computer under your control at all times. Never trust cloud servers. Just get a couple of SSD's and backup to those. Use both as backups. One as the primary, the second for redundancy. Trust outside data storage companies at your own peril.

I have the answer for you: encryption.

I have a TrueNAS (formerly FreeNAS) for the home and office networks. I create either disk images using "dd" or tar/gzip'd files and then encrypt those before they get shipped off to rsync.net.
