John 7:53 Then they all went home,
John 8:1but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, sir,” she said.
“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”
The footnotes are important here.[The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53—8:11. A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38 or Luke 24:53.]
I just want to remind everyone. John might have been there.Matthew might have been there. He was a disciple and traveled with Jesus. He had been a tax collector before meeting Jesus. Then he just quit his job and started traveling with Jesus. He didn't write about it, according to the footnotes. He wrote a synopsis of stories he heard and some of what he saw. He was not part of the inner circle.
Mark might have been there, but he didn't write about it, according to the footnotes. Mark was a kid. He would later become a thorn but for now, he's just a kid who was in the crowd following Jesus. He wrote a synopsis of stories he heard and maybe a couple things he might have seen. He was not one of the original twelve. He was not part of the inner circle.
Luke was not there. He was a doctor who wrote a synopsis of the stories he heard about Jesus.
John was a disciple. He was part of the inner circle. Of all the humans Jesus dealt with, John is the one called "Beloved". John might have been there. It was beginning to be extremely dangerous to be with Jesus. The Pharisees, Sadducees, Teachers of the Law, and the elders were all trying to catch Jesus in a lie or get Him to say something they could twist. John was there to see and hear most of it. John was one of the first men Jesus chose to work with Him.
It's a beautiful story. It probably didn't go off so beautiful. They probably brought her out naked and ashamed. The probably brought her out naked and afraid!
She must have been surprised when Jesus just let her go. Of course, He didn't just let her go. He told her "Don't do that anymore". [paraphrased]
John was there when no one cast the first stone.
What did Jesus write in the dirt?
