What do you suggest??

My dog just caught a baby possum. It is not dead and I'm really not sure how injured it is. No blood that I can see. It is just laying there upright and appears to be breathing normally. Don't know if it is stunned or slowly dying. I feel horrible for the poor thing but am afraid to go out and check on it. What should I do?

I would have to go check on it. I couldn't leave it just laying there. Good Luck...

It's gone

I just went downstairs to look out the sliding glass door and it's gone. Must have just been stunned and is ok now. I am not going to go outside and look for it but I will have to check the backyard in the morning before letting the dog out just in case it died somewhere in the yard.

You know, I thought of something after my first reply. ( I just sent RareBreed into what could be a rabid situation). Good idea to check the yard before letting the dog out. Just in case.

We had one eating all the birdseed out of the birdfeeder. I remember opossums bieng fiesty little things. Be careful.

 Lucky for me, I don't neccessarily take the advice of strangers on the Internet. There wasn't a chance in heck I'd go out there near that thing. Baby or not. Possums give me the willies and I know the damage they can do with those teeth. I just felt sorry for the little guy. If it had been dead, I would have grabbed a shovel and thrown it in the woods but it was just sitting there looking at me and my kids through the sliding glass door. I did manage to get the door open enough to snap a picture of him so I could show my husband when he gets back home on Sunday. He is/was a cutie!!

That happened once at my house a few years back. It just laid there and I walked to what I thought was close enough to it and it just layed there. I thought it was dead, so I called a friend of mine and asked him to come over and bury it and from the time I called and he came to the house, the possum had dissappeared. Thats when I really figured out what they mean when people say to play possum. I guess its true they really do just lay and play dead.

Well. I knew he wasn't dead because I could see him breathing. I think he was just scared. Plus when I grabbed my dog, he was on his side. I put her in the crate upstairs and went back downstairs to check on it and it had righted itself onto it's feet but had not moved. My youngest son (4yrs old) was really freaking out about it. Strangely, I remained rather calm.

Our Dalmatian (RIP Blaze) killed a huge one years ago. Grabbed it and with one jerk, snapped it's neck. It was both awesome and gruesome to watch. Tonight I knew something was up because Malamute don't normally bark and she was barking outside my window so I went flying downstairs to see what was going on.

:confused:Maybe he was playing dead

:yeahthat: That's where the phrase "playing oppossom" comes from!! :lmao: Glad he/she seems okay. Back when Daughter was in her first year at Chopticon, we came home from a Dr's. appointment one day and there was a baby oppossum laying in the front yard. It had been raining all day and it looked dead. Then, she noticed it moved. We took it to the Chesapeake Wildlife Sanctuary (closed now).

She got another one

Or maybe the same one from Friday night. This time, it didn't end so well. She wasn't about to give up this one as easily as the last one. Our neighbor advised that she saw our dog tossing something up in the air in our backyard. She was playing with the darn thing. :ohwell:

Take your dog to the vet! ie... rabies.

They are fighting back

Dog cornered yet another baby possum last night but this time, the possum wasn't taking her crap. There was a stand-off in our backyard with the dog circling the possum and the possum baring its teeth. Luckily the dog was smart enough not to get too close. We got the dog in and the possum ran away.

Is there anything we can do to keep those things out of our yard? We have a fence and we have no clue how they get in there. They could maybe squeeze under the gate or possibly have a nest underneath our shed. I don't want our dog to get hurt or the possums to get hurt but husband is about ready to get out his gun next time.

Any advice would be great.
