What forms to make personalized plate historic?

One of my fleet turned 20 this year and I'd like to take advantage of the "historic" tags to get out of the smog check hassle (not that it hasn't been passing) along with the reduced registration fees. Right now the car has personalized plates, and I'd like to keep them as the car becomes historic. A stop into the DMV today to get some idea of what is needed (current registration expires at the end of October) left me perplexed as nobody seemed to know exactly what to do.

Has anyone done it and can pass on any secrets of the trade?

Claff, this is all i could find, If it's not modified i don't see what their problem is. Though trust me i have had many problems dealing with MDDMV on relatively basic issues with tags and registrations. If everything is straight forward it looks like Form VR-096. I would try this form.
Good luck dealing with them........ I do think i read somewhere that it can not be used as an every day commuter vehicle. Plus not sure what implications this would have on insurance. My neighbor had a 1964 corvette with historic tags and obviously he did not drive it work every day.

any of the specialty tags .... Historic, Street Rod etc ...

required that the vehicle not be driven on a daily basis .... and I have heard that the MPS looks out for this

Not worried about getting busted, the car is a weekend toy. We have other cars in the fleet for daily driving duties. I worry more about the "not substantially altered, remodeled", etc since the car does have some aftermarket parts and pieces, but nothing major.

I appreciate the relatively early break we get on Historic tags compared to most other states and wouldn't want to abuse it by putting it on an every-day car. Not that I haven't seen it done by others.

I done it you have to have another vehicle registered (Your everyday car). You need to take your tags and your title and proof of insurance with you to the mva. And they issue you tags. I would not worry about after market parts and would not offer any information to mva

Sorry I didn't have the personalized Plates I don't know if you can keep them??

It's pretty much taken care of, though it took going through four or five people at the MVA to figure out what needed to be done. First step was to get the car registered as historic and get generic plates that say so. Getting personalized historic plates is a separate process. I had to fill out the form for personalized plates and bring it to the counter. They have spaces for your four choices of plates on the form but I just put down the one plate I already have. "Do we even know if this plate is available?" "It's on my car now" followed by another four person huddle. We'll see in a few weeks whether they got it right or not.

We recently went through the 'process' for a vintage Bronco..but stayed away from MVA doing it. In our case, it ended up being a two-stepper..we had to get title and regular Street Rod tags and then put in the app for the personalized tags. They have now shown up and we have to turn in the non-personalized tags...

It was easy... FastStop took good care of us as always...

yeah I put Historic Tags on my 86 Grand Wagoner .......

you only need worry if a vehicle is radically altered ..... like a VW Sandrail ... that would require street rod tags .....

but a louder exhaust and some new wheels, I would not worry about
