It's a deragatory acronym for Southern Maryland InBred. It refers to the original settlers of this county coming over on the Ark and Dove, remaining isolated and inter-marrying.
It's a way for people to insult the locals and think they are being funny. Ha Ha.
I'm not from here. I didn't grow up here.
However, I know many locals. Of which, the overwhelming majority have been kind, generous and hard working. Many of them are educated, have jobs in a wide variety of sectors, including on base, commuting to DC and more. Not to mention the majority of your 100% volunteer fire departments and rescue squads is county locals.
The ones I see with the most issues, from racism to plain ignorance, to hatefulness, are the transplants from other states.

FINALLY someone has the real meaning behind it and not all the speculation and crap people make up. Also, there was an article once about the term being used in Charles County also with the same explanation and also including the Native Americans. I personally hate the term myself. The only people I hear use it are from other states or other counties too trying to be funny.

Good for you, There are actually Smibs here, but you won't find them driving pickups. They are the unfortrtunates who were inbred when the county was very isolated. Some traits are still pretty obvious,but they may just be better people than you, who have moved down here. So F the heck off.

I never thought too much of the term "SMIB" since it always came from disgruntled transplants that their jobs forced them to move here. With no exception, everyone I have personally met, that uses that term, has some serious personality flaws........and they are all ugly.

The last few posts are interesting because I am a transplant but the only time I've ever even used that term in the 9 months I've lived here are when 1) asking what it was and 2) referring to it in order to explain how the people of this area treat and talk about each other. I've only ever heard it used in name-calling by people that claim have grown up here and "have the right" to use it.
I am a female in my late twenties and I socialize with a wide variety of people in age groups ranging from late teens to the elderly each day. Like I said, I haven't lived here long, so maybe if that's they perception you'd like "transplants" to have (by the way, I'm not here because of work and I am in no way whatsoever miserable) then you should re-evaluate how that word is actually being used - especially by the younger generations who, imho, seem to use it the most. Quite frequently. And without subsequent liability, actually.
