What is wrong with my computer?

I can go on and off the internet all day, no problem, but as soon as Huntr gets on it, with his user id, it won't dial up properly. We have to go in and delete all the temporary internet files and reboot. After that, he can go on and off all he wants, but as soon as I try, I have to go and delete the files and reboot.

We had a worm-type virus last week, which we caught with a virus program, but I have no idea how long it was there. Could that have done the damage? If so, is there a way to fix it w/o reformating and/or reinstalling?

Anyone have any other ideas what the problem and/or solution is?

First.. Why is Hunter accessing the internet under a seperate user ID? Second... Why aren't you having virus scan run every morning at 3:00 a.m. ?

He has different preferences set up, different favorites, etc. My virus scan was out of date up until last week. It was running frequently, but missed the more recent virus. My problems started AFTER I deleted the virus.

Easiest Non technical fix.... Go to Norton or whom ever, to manually fix the issue. ( Look the virus up and start from go.)

Safest Route... Wipe the PC. I' sorry I hate this advice. :frown:

You don't understand. I don't have a virus. I only mentioned it because of the possibility that the virus I used to have may have damaged some files somewhere. I don't know what files may be damaged, or if the virus had anything to do with it.

What do you mean when you say 'it won't dial up properly"? Does it give you a message? Lock up? ???
It says "initializing" but it never starts the dialing process.

You might have to wipe, if you deleted a critical file...:frown:
I'd rather just keep deleting the temp folders. I wiped the drive a few months ago, I'd rather not go through that again.

Could be a damaged operating system. There is a way to 'repair' your operating system. My memory is fussy about how to do it, but we had to with my XP machine. I remember loading the CD and acting as if we were going to reload the OS, but selecting repair instead. You might want to research this route before you wipe it.

Delete the dial up network under his profile and re-add it.
Is there a way to preserve his favorites if I do that? If he has to recreate it, I'd like to at least warn him.

Yeah, I ran a spyware program and you'd be amazed how many porn sites put that stuff into your computer.

Copy the favorites folder and add it back in once you are done.... Virus scan it first.

You can burn the favorites folder onto a cd, and just overwrite them back onto a fresh install...
