One key turns it on the other keybturns it off. (I think)

Insert does what you describe.. click on the delete key see if it goes back..

I know. I want the process to reverse now. I am sure I have forgotten more way more than I ever learned.

Pressing the Insert key toggles it between Insert and Overstrike modes. Open a word processor and watch the status change in the status line.

Using the Delete key does what you want as opposed to the Backspace key.
