What Not to Say in a Job Interview

This afternoon I interviewed a guy for a position we're hiring for. Toward the end of the interview, he asked where the restrooms were and stated he needed to be excused, I gave directions on how to find them and waited for him to return to conclude the conversation.

When he returned he sat down, I asked him if he had any questions or anything important he wanted to add. That's when he went into a long explanation about his irritable bowl syndrome and that it tends to kick in under stress.

He explained that it's important that he not have a lot of stress with his job and that he needs be able to get to a men's room quickly at certain times. Needless to say, everyone in our office has been laughing all afternoon. Not at IBS, but that he would bring it up in a job interview. We'll be going back to the stack of resumes tomorrow morning!

Just be sure that wherever you have to document why he wasn't hired put down something like, "Applicant indicated that he doesn't perform well under stress." or the next thing you know, he'll be accusing you of not hiring him because of his medical condition.

Yeah, I hadn't thought of that. Maybe he has a plan in the works. If he doesn't end up with the job he planted the seed for a suit.

I actually had a similar situation a few years ago. A woman mentioned a medical condition in a job interview, which was worse under stress. She said she was looking for a low-stress situation. After the interview I called my HR department (I was required to report feedback on all interviewees) and they said, "low-stress? :killingme :roflmao: "
