Portable Scanners
Hello,
I purchased a portable scanner a couple of years ago for my husband. I did a lot of research and spoke to the distributer about what type to purchase. He told me that most counties are going digital, so make sure that your scanner can be upgraded to a digital if it is not already.
A portable scanner from where I purchased cost around $500.00 and up but are well worth the money. I had my husbands portable programmed for Calvert and Anne Arundel and I can pick up some Anne Arundel in Southern Calvert. I would have had it programmed to St. Marys County but we are moving to the border of the 2 counties I had it programmed for.
They can divert around accidents when you are traveling, and you can also listen to the "real" happenings in the tri-county area in reference to 911 calls for life-threatening emergencies and the crimes that you do not read about in the newspapers. On a daily basis for instance if someone is having a heart attack, I hear the dispatcher state, " First Call For Medic, No Medic Availalbe", all the way up to "Fifth Call for Medic, No Medic Available". This is because the county commissioners will not pay the Fire Department or Medics because they do not want to pay for the insurance they would have to obtain if they were to pay the Firefighters and Medics. These county commissioners need to re-assess their priorities. There has also been a huge increase in home invasions, car jackings, robberies, burglaries, stores being held up on a daily basis over the past year or so.
Since the economy has crashed, people have lost their careers/jobs, homes, they are doing whatever they can to feed their families. I bet if you listen to the scanner for a couple days/nights in a row, you will be shocked as to how many more felony crimes are commited in Calvert County and I am sure the surrounding counties also, and you will find out what is really happening in your neck of the woods.
People that don't have scanners have no clue as to how close they are to being robbed in the daylight or night hours. Around 5p.m. to 7p.m. I hear people calling to 911 because they just arrived home from work and their home had been broken into when they were not home. This is many people a day that call this in. I've had a scanner all my life, as my dad was a police officer and it is like white noise to me, and I have noted the tremendous increase in dangerous crimes over the past year, year and a half. The people that do these crimes have already lost everything they have worked hard for, so they do not care if someone is home when they break into the house. What do they have to lose? They usually have a gun with them also.
I will take this another step. After you listen to the scanner a few nights or until you get your share of the rise of crimes being commited, I bet you will buy a gun to protect your family. That is how scarey Calvert County has become.
Take Care of your own because the law will not do it.
