What's a "Silver Alert"???

Driving in on one of those large message boards above the Beltway, it said there was a Silver Alert for a Green Pontiac and to call Baltimore Co PD. Is that like an Amber Alert but for an old person? Some elderly person with memory problems who hasn't returned home?? Just curious. If so, I hope they find him/her soon. That must be scary for both the person and their family.
