someone was cooking and there smoke detector which is hooked into there alarm company called it in as a fire. the home owner called eoc back and said her son was cooking and the smoke detector went off and she was 2min from home. eoc asked them if they wanted to cancel the box and I guess the chief said lets go investigate so they did. I feel for the person who was cooking. would you like it if you were cooking breakfast and the fire department showed up at your door and you are like huh what is going on here.

Mechanicsville (2) and Hollywood (7) were dispatched at 0852 for a residential fire alarm.
Multiple Mechanicsville units were available in Trent Hall as they were on a live fire drill and (Engine 222, Engine 224) responded immediately.
Engine 23 responded from Station 2 and was the first unit to arrive on scene with the homeowner to find a light haze of smoke inside from food on the stove. Engine 23 placed the box in service and remained on scene to ventilate the structure.

Mechanicsville units returned to the drill only to be dispatched again shortly for a CO detector sounding with no symptoms only to be immediately placed in service by Fireboard due to a phone call from the homeowner advising all was well.

CobbWeb was also correct in his statement that fireman are hungry in the morning. He neglected to mention however that firemen are hungry ALL the time!

Free of Charge!

There are no charges for Fire or EMS assistance in this county. Thats why we count on donations and fundraisers to support our operating costs and renting out our social halls for various public events.

Advanced Life Support ( The Medic Unit), St. Marys County Advanced Life Support Unit, Inc. (Emergency Medical Services)
is also free of charge. The county supports the ALS unit 100% financially.

Also if you are in an accident and require a med-evac there is no charge by Maryland State to flown out by one of their Troopers. I am unsure if the MedStar chopper charges for an emergency flyout.

It may seem silly at first but if you think about it it does make sense. An alarm company calls the EOC (Emergency Operations Center) saying they have a fire alarm activating. Fireboard dispatches the first two due companies ( one for a ladder truck), as a precaution. Often times the alarm company calls back in minutes saying it was malfunction or the homeowner called in with an accidental activation.

Even if it is a malfunction we often continue in routine response just as a precaution.

In this case one unit remained on scene to ventilate the structure of smoke. We are here to help. No one wants a house that smells of smoke!
