What's going on with cell phones??

In Calvert & St. Mary's Co, many are having a HECK of a time with our cell phones. Fade, static, dropped calls going & coming, garbled. The latest is voice messages not showing up for hours after they were placed.

Our phones are new. We were told our old analogs would no longer work well, too old. I've been told repeatedly that Verizon is the best service provider in the area. If that's true, I pity us all! Our phones are used primarily for business contacts.

Any idea what's going on? Talk to Verizon? Forget it.....everything's peachy dandy as far as they're concerned!

Where at in Calvert and St Mary's are you having these problems?

Inside a building??

Verizon is better then anything else around here, and I personally have no problem with their service..

I recently switched from Cingular to Verizon. Not because I was unhappy with cingulars service but because I wanted the Nav feature not offered on Cingulars phones. I have to admit Cingulars service was better. I used to get some garble with them but hardly ever had a dropped call. I get them all the time in a few spots here in Lusby with V. But I must admit it isnt too bad.

The word around is Verizon is the better of the choices, but even with Verizon, it is known you don't get excellent reception in certain areas of the county. There was supposed to be a zoning meeting about putting up a Verizon tower near the Wildewood water tank, but I don't know how that turned out....anyone know?

I've had numerous problems

but considering I have NEXTEL, it's nothing unusual. Cell towers could all be down and I wouldn't experience any abnormalaties.

Cell Phone Issues - Vandalism

In addition to mailbox vandalism, there has been vandalism of utility comcast boxes. I'm not sure exactly what the technical issue is but a St. Mary's deputy told me that the vandalism could have a negative impact on the following: cable, Voice-Over-IP, phone service for wireless systems, burgular alarm transmissions or transmissions for medical beacon devices (think of "Help, I've fallen and I can't get up", which automatically places a call for emergency assistance).

Last Saturday, it affected some people from about midnight to 4:30am, when they were able to "fix" the problem by hooking up a generator... again I'm not sure about the technical issue.

Perhaps, it gives you another line of thought to pursue...

Try calling *228. This reprograms your phone with the latest cell tower info. You're supposed to do it about once a month and I did see improved performance after doing so.

This only updates the towers. Verizon told day there is a separate utility/tool that updates "programs" (per say) on a phone that may be outdated.

I just did mine a few minutes ago... they have two options now. Option 1 is for program updates. Option 2 is for tower (roaming) updates. I did both.

Cool, I didn't realize they were doing this now. Then again, it has been a while since I updated my phone.

Shygirl and all who responded: THAT makes a bit of sense. We ARE in an area where mailboxes seem to be fair game for local knuckle draggers.

I wonder....since cell phone service seems to be lacking in many parts of the 2 counties (I don't know about Charles)...would it be a valid reason for early termination of the manditory contracts with the service providers? After all, they are NOT fulfilling their end of the bargain...but if you're late on paying your bill....kinda one sided there, eh?

I have nextel and for the first time in a LONG time i'm concidering going back to verison :/
if i go outside i get a full signal.....but put 1 foot inside the door and it's no service
the main prob i have with verison is that for no reason my bill would fluctuate DRASTICLY.
for 1 month i would only turn on the phone to make a call and it would be well within the "free nights and weekends" time....and the bill for that month alone was over $200.00
thats when i switched to nextel, i figured i was sending some verison exec. kids to college :ohwell:

Nextel is ####. Anytme I make a call, I pick up the phone and start talking and then I hear nothing all of a sudden then this strange beep that posts a message "Network Error" and I'm just going "What?!"

So I call back and again, I get the same thing. So they call only to reach my voicemail and if I call my voicemail, the effing call drops.

Last thing I ever have to worry about is my phone ringing at work because more than half the time, my phone goes straight to voicemail, even if I am in service.

Oh, and if a Verizon Wireless caller leaves a voicemail, that'll come - three days later.

So I call NEXTEL about this and they say "We have registered only one dropped call since you joined Nextel 'Together with Sprint' in May 2005." :bs:

My husband's work switched from Cingular to Nextel and I despise Nextel! He hardly ever has a signal, or when I call him I get the message to please wait while the person is located :blahblah:. It's a pain in the rear!
