What's the difference?

I just noticed that my oldest son's name is listed on somdnews.com for his school. Anyone happen to know what the criteria is for High Honors compared to Honors? Is it that he made Honor Roll all 4 quarters? I noticed that several kids who my son considers smarter than him were listed under Honors so it made me wonder.
SoMdNews.com: Mill Creek Middle School

Where specifically is your son's name? I think the difference between "Honors" and "High Honors" is based on G.P.A. and wether or not he carried straight A's for four quarters. CONGRATS! :yay: just the same.

High Honors is GPA of 4.0 , Honor Roll is 3.0.

My son was listed under "high honors". What's strange is there are two sets of lists. One printed in March and the other in April. My son is listed in "high honors" on both list but a lot of his friends are on one list as "high honors" and the other list as "honors". The time frame doesn't even match grading periods or anything. 3rd quarter ended after the March list was printed and 4th quarter had just begun when the April list was printed.

The bar has definitely been lowered for honor roll. My son blew off a lot of assignments in the 4th quarter and dropped at least one letter grades in most of his classes and even got a "D' in English and still made honor roll. I wanted to give the certificate back. They are rewarding mediocre work. I guess it looks good for the school when 75% of the class makes "Honor Roll".

My oldest was telling me that some of the people on the "honors" list got C's and made the list, which I found surprising because typically, Honor Roll is A's and B's only. But... since schools are no longer giving F's anymore, why am I not surprised that C's constitutes Honor Roll.

What school does he go to? I've never seen a school that allowed anyone with a D to make the honor roll.

Getting a 70 is considered a "C" now. Getting a grade that is not passing, because you can't say fail anymore, is <60. In elementary school they can't give out less than a 50. So if a kid puts his name on a blank test, he gets a 50.

70% has been a C since I was in school.

What school passes kids at 50%. In St. Mary's 50% is most definitely a failing grade.

I don't think they pass, they just don't get a F any longer. I believe they now get an E which is the same as an F but apparently won't hurt the kid's feelings because it's not call Fail anymore. :ohwell:

Chuck County had E's when I was going to school there YEARS ago. But, I'd really like to know where his kid goes to school. I cannot imagine any school having an honor roll consisting of D students.

We live in Calvert and luckily, neither of my kids have gotten anything lower than a B on their report cards so I have no clue about E's vs F's. I just remember a few years ago hearing something about schools (not necessarily SoMD schools in particular) dropping the F grade and replacing it with E to avoid disappointment in kids who receive a failing grade.

Having C and D students receive Honor Roll credit just cheapens the kid who worked hard and received A's and B's. When I was looking at the list, I did notice that most of the 6th grade class made either list (High Honors or Honors) but it did seem that the list was a lot less for those in 7th and 8th. Maybe standards are higher.

What I don't understand is why somdnews would put out the lists in March and April. It doesn't match the grading periods and kids on one list in March were sometimes on a different list in April.

somdnews is just publishing what is given to them by the BOE at the time received and if it makes you feel any better these list have absolutely no value. Being on honor roll or High Honors lists does not go on college applications or any other applications I am aware of as it is the actual overall transcript of GPA, classes attended and level of classes taken that is of value. Nobody ever cares about these lists.

Oh, I know these list have no real value. I was just surprised that they were even published.

I agree. I think it is a waste of BOE money as that sure is a lot of newspaper space they are paying for and nothing comes from having these lists published.

From what I've been told, the newspaper space does not cost them anything. The newspapers use it as a filler.
