I unplugged my desk top when we had the storm earlier (I didn't shut it down right). Now I get a message: Stop Inaccessible Boot Device
The keyboard is on, but the computer does not respond to it.

windows cannot finish loading because it is having a problem reading the hard drive / critical boot files have been corrupted

If you have a set of CDs that came with the computer, one of them may be bootable with recovery or diagnostics. What you want to do is boot with a CD that gets you to the C:/ prompt. Hopefully that disk will have the program CHKDSK on it. At the C:/ prompt, type:

CHKDSK C: /R (note the space between : and /)

With any luck this will recover your hard drive.

Thanks GWGuy. I'll see if I have discs but I don't think I do. Do they have to be specific to THIS computer?

Just a quick note.....I had a desktop running 2000 that would produce a boot error like that if I left any sort of other memory device plugged in during the boot up..most notably, a pen drive or digital camera plugged in a USB port.

Operating systems are relatively inexpensive. I recommend Windows 7 if you have to have a PC.

ok BOP I'm thinking about doing this. I cannot find anyone with a Windows 2000 disk to try to re-boot the system.
thanks every one for the advice.

If your current system was running win 2000, I'm betting your hardware doesn't meet the requirements to run a Win 7 system. Check your hardware.
Windows 7 system requirements - Microsoft Windows
This is the bare minimum requirements, but you really want a 2Ghz processor, 3-4 Gb of RAM.

Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows

In the case you have not already checked to make sure there are no usb drives or other devices plugged in to your usb ports, or CD/DVDs in your optical drives, make sure that your BIOS is actually set up to boot from your operating system drive.

If those two dont fix it, time to go back to your last backup. You do make backups right? :(. If not, well, most people dont, and learn the hard way, whether you buy an operating system and go through the fun again of installing all your apps and drivers again, or pay someone else...

There are no usb drives or other devices plugged into ports or Cd in the optical drive. I don't know how to check if the "BIOS" is set up to boot from op syst drive. No I don't back up...it's just an old dinosaur computer that I use as a backup if laptop is having problems.
