What's with all the Yorkies?

There are a zillion of them in the Pets classifieds. Some are scams, which we've removed, but there are a ton of legit local ads for this particular breed.

Is there some Yorkie invasion that I didn't know about?

Also, thank you to all pet/livestock advertisers who actually pay your ad fees. You guys rock! We actually have people who will reduce the price of their animals by $50 so they don't have to cough up the $10 ad fee. So I really appreciate those of you who follow the rules. :yay:

I have two yorkies.....brother and sister. I have wanted them for years! They are the best little dogs. They have good temperments and are very loyal. They don't shed.....they actually have hair not fur. The funniest thing about them is that they think they are these huge dogs when it comes to trying to protect you. Thier only drawback is that they are high maintenance on grooming.......

I know there are a ton or maybe a 1/4 ton since they are so tiny. Too expensive for my taste. cute little dogs but too needy for me - having to get their hair did and all - I like my low maintenance little ankle bitters - Chihuahua's.

Mine weigh 8 and 6 pounds.....the tiny ones are actually the runts of the litter that the money hungry breeders breed over and over to achieve the tiny effect. AKC standard is 6 pounds.

I have leaned to groom them myself. I basically keep them shaved, they are more comfortable and clean that way. Yes they are needy, like having a two year old in the house, but I went into ownership knowing this ahead of time.

I had two chihuahua's years ago as a kid. One was AKC and she never shut up on the barking and the other one was mixed with terrier. Both great dogs!

I think it's because they are small and can wear all those "cute" little clothes they sell to dress them up. As well as the popularity of having a small dog to carry around with you.

Basically, the same old story "Awwwwww so cute, I have to have one"! time goes by....

then the realization that they have needs and require daily care, that they are not just a fashion accessory.

so then they get rid of them... sad

That is exactly why I didn't buy the tiny ones......they are just too fragile!!

Plus I have two rottie/labs .......and the yorkies are definitely in charge...LOL...the tiny ones would have been stepped on and hurt. The ones I have work perfectly and the bigger dogs are very gentle with them.

I have sweaters for both of mine to wear when they go outside during the winter otherwise the poor things about shake themselves to death from the cold!!!! Other than the sweaters I don't *dress* mine up........

Oh, I think the lil' clothes are cute, I was thinking about the people who get the small dogs as a fashion accessory. I bought a coat for "crazy chow dog" but he wanted no parts of it . :killingme

My chihuahua is high maintenance and very high strung.
