Look at the slide show if you want to see it. It's from the San Diego Community College District.

I wonder if there is remedial Spanish language classes for those brought to the US as children.

There are. Which honestly, I'm not mad about.

Having said that, there are adults who immigrated to the US more than 30 years ago (I'm thinking of a specific instance) and yet, cannot speak English well enough to not need an interpreter. Of course, when Vincente Fox was elected President of Mexico, she rapturously spoke of being able to vote for "her President."

Personally, I'd be embarrassed. I've picked up a smattering of every primary language of every country I've been in, and some I haven't. Tagalog, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Spanish, German, Afrikaans, Cajun French, Japanese, and I forget what all. Marylandese. It sounds sort of like English.

Sadly, I haven't used any of them in several decades, though Spanish is the most recent. It's almost like I remember one or two words, but never learned anything else. And I took German in college for 3 semesters.

Many years ago while working near Boston as a carpenter, my boss hired a team of Italian plasterers. He said “when these guys finish, the wall is as smooth as glass “.

He was right. Never saw such fine workmanship.

At lunch I tried to talk with them, asking how long they’ve been here in this country. “27 years”. Seeing he was young I asked how old are you? Same answer. So where do you live now?

No surprise. North End. Basically, Little Italy. A bastion of Italian immigrants. But he was BORN here and still barely spoke English.
