When is Insurance required in MD for teen drivers

I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find online at what point teenagers need to go on your auto insurance?
My son is 15 years and 9 mo. and I know he can get his permit now. I have been hearing the count down for quite a while now.

Do they need to go on your insurance as soon as they get behind the wheel when they have their permit when they are driving with their parents or is it once they actually get their license and are driving on their own?

I am going to call either the MVA or my insurance agent tomorrow but if anyone knows, I would love it if you would share the info.

I spoke to my insurance company.... they said that I didn't have to put her on my insurance until she got her provisional..... So it's when they are driving on their own....

My insurance company added my daughter at no charge for now because she only has the learners....

Also... at 15 & 9 Months you have to have an attendance form signed by the school before they will even let the child take the test to get the learner's....

They are also required to have 60 hours of road driving before they can get their provisional too.... they get a book to fill out when they get their learners....

MVA does not offer valiums for us .....:coffee:

But I have found that it's much easier to put my makeup on in the car now.

And since I don't really pay much attention and we get there safely, I can use the ostrich method. Bury my head in the sand! It's the only way I'll get through it and this is my second one driving.

BTW, hotcoffee is 100% spot on with the info.

I've heard that it depends on your individual insurance company. However, whenever I've discussed this before, I've been told that most of them will not charge you until your teenager actually receive their provisional license. And head's up - the new Maryland law that takes effect in October requires that teens keep their learner's permit for 9 months.

I made both of ours keep their learner's for 1 full year (just before it expired). That way, they had a year's worth of driving with either Hubby or I in the car (which, in turn, helped them to develop good driving habits). It also bought us a year's free insurance. :yay:

BTW, they make really good chauffers during this time period!!!

Oh, and by the way, don't forget about the good student discount for insurance. My son just had to renew his learner's because he didn't get a 3.0 and will now fall into the 9-month rule, so he will have actually been driving almost TWO years before he can drive any of his friends around. I'm not complaining.

And some insurance companies (mine anyway) offer a kit that if you kid reviews it and completes a couple of things will get you another (very small) discount.
