Where are the dog shelters in SOMD? Looking for a friend for my 3 year old Pom/Spitz

It's not that serious
We have a 3 year old, 12 lb, Pomernian Japanese Spitz mix that I think is getting lonely... He's VERY friendly and layed back and unnagressive... so we're looking to expand our furry family. I haven't had a ton of luck finding a shelter around here... and several of the rescue organizations, I believe, won't adopt to us because we have a 2 year old son. I'd prefer to adopt another animal rather than risk ending up with a puppy mill dog... Anyone know where a good place to start looking would be? We'd prefer a young dog about the same size and temperment as our Kona. Thanks for the input in advance!

Don't they need a lot of room though? We have a tiny yard and the pup we have now is mostly an inside dog... I only get out about 3 times a week to walk him and that's plenty for him... I LOVE Greys but I just don't know if one would be happy here... kwim?

Retired greys are just that...retired. I have a very small back yard. Walking them a couple times a week is just fine. They mostly just lay around. Greys do well in apartments. I have a small rambler and have 2 greyhounds along with 3 kids. We just step over them.

Check out the web site. We did not get ours from them as they were not around back then (our dogs are senior hounds now, 10 years old). They have meet and greets all the time. You can go to one and check out the dogs up close.

Look into www.petfinder.com if you want a comprehensive list of all the dogs currently available from the rescue groups in the area. Just type in your zip code (and any other criteria), and you'll get a detailed list.

I'll also second the Greyt Expectations recommendation---we adopted our grey from them two years ago, and I can't say enough about the organization. They really go above and beyond to ensure that your family and pup have the easiest time adjusting as possible. In the nicer months they have "Fun Runs" at one of the founders property in Lusby...My husband and I went to one to meet some of the available dogs and ended up adopting that way. Check the events page on the website and give them a call if you're interested.

We had a greyhound when I was in H.S. He was a great dog. Great around kids and lovable... but such a wussy.... my ferret would chase him around the house. I think we adopted through "Greyhounds-as-Pets".

They have small-dog syndrome.

I have one of the larger greys that GEGR has adopted out (over 90 lbs !), and in two years he has never so much as accidentally brushed up against something in my home, much less knocked anything over. My old 40 lb. lab used to do exponentially more damage with his tail alone.

Make no mistake, Greyhounds love to run when they're outside, but for some reason when they're indoors they become the laziest, most laid back dogs in the world. I think mine sleeps 22 hours/day.

Hi GEGR fans...just wanted to say it's greyt (oh geesh, it's contagious!) to here kind words about the rescue. My parents started the rescue and loved helping the dogs. I used to love seeing what new dogs we'd have at home as fosters. I was away at college most of the time they had the group, but loved helping out when I could. At one time we had 9 dogs in the house...about 6 or 7 of them were greys...and you couldn't even tell!! There was never a problem getting around, and they never got in the way!! I'm glad to see GEGR is still doing so well! I check the website every now and then, and the people who are running it are doing a fantastic job!

Did you check out Tri-County Animal Shelter? It's in Hughesville. Also there is a website called petfinder.com. GOOD LUCK finding a newbie to add to your family! :howdy:
