You can adjust the volume for your audio devices using a shortcut icon on your taskbar. By placing the volume control icon on the taskbar, you don't have to go into Sounds and Audio Devices in Control Panel each time you want to adjust the volume. To add the icon, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2. Click Sound, Speech, and Audio Devices.

3. Under Pick a task, click Change the speaker settings.

4. In the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties dialog box, on the Volume tab, select the Place volume icon in the taskbar check box, and then click OK.

Now, when you want to adjust the volume, click the icon and move the slider.

Windows XP: Display the Volume Control Icon in the Taskbar

I had an odd thing happen to my computer when I chose to d/l the "optional" updates regarding the conexant (sp?) sound hi def audio update.... after installing it and reboot, lost all sound and control panel claimed there was no hardward for sound. Easy fix, though... did a system restore to before that update, and all was right with my sounds again. So heads up, if you see that optional update for hi def sound on Vista, IGNORE it!
