Where to buy & dispose of a lawn tractor?

Well, our beloved John Deere lawn tractor took a crap and we want to replace it. Mice in our shed apparently built a nest under the hood, unbeknownst to me, and the headers are now blown. The service manager at the place we bought it from 6 years ago has decided not to give us any money on a trade in, although he assured us three times it would be worth something. We weren't expecting a lot at all but he had assured us he'd give us something. So we will be taking our business elsewhere from this point on.

A few questions....

- Where in SOMD do you recommend we buy a new lawn tractor from, other than Lusby Motors?
- Where in Calvert County services them, other than Lusby Motors?
- What the heck do we do with our old one? It runs, but not well, and the mower of course doesn't work any longer. We don't really want to bother trying to sell it on Craigs List or anything like that. We just want to get rid of it.

Thanks so much!

Put an ad on the SOMD classifieds for the old one as "Free to a good home, needs work, but you are welcome to come and pick it up". Probably go quick. If I was closer I would take it off your hands.

Good idea, thanks. I don't do the Freecycle thing or Craigs List so that's a very good alternative. Hubby was thinking of just parking it out by the mailbox with a similar sign.

You could also call these guys and maybe get a buck or two; Scrap Metal Collection – Call: 301-855-3078 / 866-634-3078, they are in Owings. :yay:

This is what i was going to do with our old tractor, however before i could even place the ad, some guy stopped by the house and offered to take it off my hands.

Drop it off on Great Mills Road next to where the sofa was. You can re-use the "For Sale, $50" sign, too.

It'll be gone before first light tomorrow.

If it's a JD, and only 6 years old, and it's only the engine that's got an issue, it's still worth a bunch of money. There's nothing wrong with the frame, mower deck, wheels, etc?? Don't give it up for cheap. Any small engine mechanic worth their title should be able to rebuild it.

JDs don't lose value, if it's a real JD, not an MTD knockoff. I bought mine with the house in '94, and it was a few years old at that point. Still going strong, only now showing some signs of rot-thru on the deck.

True, a JD should have some value, put it on for $200.00 or best offer good parts tractot or can be repaired. Mine was a 13 year old sears tractor. Still could have tried the for sale parts tractor trick, just got tired of it sitting in the yard. Have no complaints about it at all. Did buy a JD from Home depot, no complaints at all yet.

A John Deere from Home Depot is NOT a John Deere.

That it what i have been told, but the color and the name matches, and so far i have been pleased with it. It was what we could afford at the time the 13 year old sears died suddenly. I am certainly expecting to get 13 years out of this one or i will be disappointed, they even sent me a free hat to make me look like a real JD owner. I really try to take care and baby my mechanical equipment. I think the only reason the Sears tractor died was i made a big mistake by adding some carburetor cleaner to the gas tank. I did try to measure it out for 3 gallons of fuel, but the engine blew up shortly there after. Note to self, never doothat again.

A 6 year old John Deere should be like new, my grandfathers 40 year old John Deere lawn tractor still runs.

What model? We have one here on the fritz, maybe I can combine the two and get a working tractor out of it..

Blown header? Huh? I presume you mean the mice built a nest inside of your exhaust..if that's the case, just pull the exhaust off, clean the pipe out, and put it back on. The tractor wont' run very well with a plugged up exhaust port. That's a VERY easy fix, and shouldn't even take you long to do.

Lawn tractors are pretty simple machines, if you know your way around a car, you shouldn't have much trouble fixing a lawn mower. I have an 89 Deere with 750hours on it, and it still runs/mows like new. It looks dated, but I don't care.

If it's a "real" deere, you shouldn't have any issues getting parts from a local supplier (like Gardners) or online.

Which models are you referring to? Both the D series and the X series models are listed on the Deere site. The D series is sold at both the box stores and JD dealers. Those models are the same wherever you buy them. The price is also the same as that was part of the agreement Deere made to the box stores to let the box stores sell them.

The X-series is a significant step up in a lot of features. Thicker, stronger frames, better paint process, steel supports for the steering columns, better engines, more features and options. Compare a D series side by side with an X-series, and you will see the difference. Drive them and you will feel the difference.

Box store Deeres amy not be built in tje same factory as the rest but they are made from the same parts as all of them made by AYP.. Some Deere are made in Moline but about the same number are made in Japan..
