#1.. first and foremost.. check it closely, make sure nobody's trying to pawn off a Baltimore rat..

Magnum

Should be Huntin
Dang a few weeks ago someone tried to give me one that was 8 weeks old... I didn't take it though, too scared that I would sit on it or step on it. I'm too clumsy to have a little dog like that.

CHI's

AHA! a subject close to my heart- we have 5 Chi's- will have first litter sometime end of 2005 to beginning of 2006- We are raising Long Hair Chihuahuas- they are beautiful- we have two older and one young pet short hairs also. There are alot of breeders, alot of sources, especially on the web, and AKC has a site and the standards there. Mostly you have to decide what type you want, preference of color, what do you want to do with the dog, what are your circumstances at home (kidds, other large dogs, etc) do you want a pet for 400 dollars and up or an AKC, show potential, conformationally correct dog that can be 800 to 1400, or are you a dog show fan- then you get well into the 2000 dollar range to compete.

That stuff aside, the dogs personality is paramount, because they are extremely smart and are like teenagers trying to either please you or test you! You also would have to be attuned to a small, affectionate, has to be with you or around you dog that weighs from 2 lbs (tiny one) to 6 lbs (top of the standard) or maybe up to 12 lbs ( a pet type small mix) These dogs are dogs...so small or not, they try to boss other dogs, love to chase their toys or birds, and no one should even think of housing them outside like the larger breeds.....I actually had the older female outside gardening and catching some sun last year- she is 6 lbs....long story short Mr Eagle decided she looked like a good snack and swooped down and grabbed her- luckily she grabbed him and put him off balnace as he tumbled into the pine tree...she had marks and talon puncture but was okay. Unusal instance and timing, but freaked me out! ANd yes, all the dogs get out for fun, exercise and air- but I watch the skies!!!

Needless to say, I could go on and on.......feel free to ask specific questions! And look on the web...one great forum is chihuahua people forum at http://www.chihuahua-people.com/. If you want to see our dogs at halloween, go to http://www.geocities.com/dazeworkfarm/home1.html

ARF (Animal Relief Fund) has had a couple come through just recently. Keep an eye on locale shelters if you are looking to adopt. I think the most important to look for in little dogs like that is temperment. Since they are so little a lot of the ones we saw at the vet were fear bitters. I have also seem some very sweet ones that just want to cuddle. There was one at ARF that took to me and they kept trying to get me to take him home but my dog wouldn't like that at all. Good luck in your search.
