Which Router and Modem?

I kept blaming Metrocast for my connectivity issues but it turns out it may very likely be my router. I have to reset it once every few days. Linksys WRT54G Wireless G Broadband Router.

Does modem matter? I just have a WebSTAR DPC2100R2. I also have a Motorola Surfboard SB4100. Is that any better?

I hate feeling like I want to :duel: my computer!

Thanks for your helpful insight as always!

Most likely the router. I had a netgear router and every other day it had to be reset or if I went to websites like myspace or facebook it would stop working. Got a new linksys router and everything seems to be working fine. However I did upgrade everything to Wireless N instead of G.

NETGEAR! NETGEAR! NETGEAR!!!

In 6 years, I've never had any problems with my Netgear Routers. Currently I have the WNR834B.

WNR834B - RangeMax Wireless-N Router

Linksys may be a sub-company of Cisco, but for some reason, they never seem to hold up. Also, Netgear's User Interface (UI) is MUCH more user friendly than Linksys' - and this is coming from an IT Professional.

And please, please, please, NEVER buy a D-Link Router. I have never seen such cheaply made junk since Gateway Computers or E-Machines came around.

The Netgear RangeMax is going for $149 at BestBuy (it's worth the money).

NETGEAR - RangeMax NEXT Gigabit Wireless-N Access Point - WN802T-100NAS

Good hunting!

[edit] Also, use that Motorola Modem you have.

However, with both routers (Linksys or Netgear) you will have to reset them from time to time. I have Comcast, and for some reason, I lose the IP Address for my Router from time to time (probably because Comcast doesn't 'lease' out their addresses for more than two days), but it's no big deal and it won't happen as often as much as you keep your Router turned on all the time. You can also go into your Router's UI to release and renew your IP address when you lose your IP from MetroLink. I've taught my wife how to do the release/renew function on the Router and I get less phone calls at work now when she can't connect.

Are you good with computers? If so flash it with a some open source firmware like tomato ( I use on mine) or DD-WRT (used to use.) Note not all WRT-54G will accept this. Ive been using them for years and they are much more better then Linksys. Also if your going to just throw it away can I have it?

:pete:, define good! I am a DBA, but the hardware networking topics are out of my realm. So is this something I would download? And then keep the router?

Thanks much! :buddies:

Yea just do a search on them and there are step by step guides. Its not difficult and if your a DBA then you should be fine. People tend to get intimidated by computers and I try to tell them not too.

I had a mechanic friend who was awesome at cars, but PCs scared the crap out of him. I told him there is no difference between me and him, were both mechanics just of different things. Of course a lot of IT people are like that guy from SNL years ago and are pompus lol.

Anyway I digress. If you decide to to do it you will need to follow the guides and make sure your router is compatible. On the bottom of the router you will have a version number and compare that to the chart to tell you if it is. There are a lot of other cool things you can do with the WRT54G once the open source firmware is on there.
