1 John 2:1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.
3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.
7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.
9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.
I used Blue Letter Bible as usual, for clarification. We have an Advocate: God’s desire is that you may not sin. Yet if we do, there is provision made — an Advocate, a defense lawyer on our side. Our Advocate is Jesus Christ Himself.
Lenski on the ancient word for Advocate: “Demosthenes uses it to designate the friends of the accused who voluntarily step in and personally urge the judge to decide in his favor.”
We have an Advocate: Jesus is our defender, even when we sin now. God is not shocked by human behavior. He has seen it all in advance. He didn’t forgive us at one time to later say, “Look what they did now! If I would have known they would go and do that, I would have never forgiven them.” His forgiveness is available to us now.
The Super Bowl is coming up this weekend. I bet there will be chatter about SF and KC in church! I don't know if DraftKings will cover that sure bet, huh! I was watching a sports newscast that discussed the "Swift" factor. Taylor Swift may not be in the crowd, because she is performing in Japan on Saturday. We all know she could perform in Japan on Saturday [their time] and make it back to the Super Bowl in Las Vegas on Sunday [Our Time]. It'll be rough, and she will be exhausted [like she would do more than sleep on the flight] but she could make it. I heard someone say... "If Taylor loves her man, she'll be there."
The flight from Tokyo to Las Vegas is 11 hours and 35 minutes. Japan is 14 hours ahead.
There will be Swiftie 87 Jersey's available. There will be KC Jerseys. There will be SF Jerseys. People will know if you are a KC, SF, or Swiftie by the Jersey or the colors you wear that day. Of course, the girls could just wear a little white cardigan with an 87 sewn on and others would know them to be a Swiftie.
A lot of people will put on a Swiftie shirt because they are promoting romance, not the Bowl Game. Swiftie fans will spend a fortune on Super Bowl tickets to support Taylor and her man. As a matter of fact, I bet there are some who know Taylor and Travis but they don't have a clue about Mahomes. Those are the Swifties.
Now back to the verses.
People will know we are on Team Jesus by what we do rather than what we wear. There are people who wear a choir robe on Sunday and then cuss their neighbor Monday morning. Even though they are dressed in the choir robe of Team Jesus, their behavior shows them on Team Anyone but Jesus.
Sunday morning, a lot of people will put on their Sunday-go-to-meeting-clothes and attend church. They will be dressed like Christians. They may carry a Bible, but most these days carry a tablet instead. They will be there to be seen. They'll want us to think they are fans of Team Jesus. They are dressed Team Jesus, but they are just Team Jesus wannabes. They wannabe seen by the people in the pews so people will do business with them. They wannabe known as Agape so people will trust them.
Sunday you can wear one of three Jersey's to show your "team spirit": SF, KC, or Swiftie 87.
John says, in the verses, people will know if you are on Team Jesus, not by what Jersey you wear, but by your actions. If you are wearing a Team Jesus jersey cussing your uber driver because you're drunk and late for the afterparty, odds are, you really don't support Team Jesus.
Which team will you support on Sunday?
