I know best is subjective. But who is your top singer of all time?

I'll go with Whitney Houston. She had incredible range.

FWIW, Rolling Stone magazine picked Aretha Franklin as the number 1 greatest singer of all time.

I'll go with that. As much as I love Aretha, sorry but Whitney had the pipes.

Runners up:

Linda Ronstadt
Ann Wilson
Lady Gaga (it's easy to dismiss her but she has a terrific voice)

For the guys there's Freddie Mercury, Michael Jackson close behind, then there's everyone else. People like to say Frank Sinatra but that was more marketing than anything because he wasn't that great. Dean Martin and Bing Crosby had a much better voice than Sinatra.

Amy Winehouse had a very distinct voice. Too bad she did early check out. It would have been interesting to watch her career arc.

I forget his name. 1 of he crooner type singers from Ally McBeal had a great voice. But obviously not very famous because I can't even remember his name now.

I think Harry Connick Jr. is this century's Sinatra.

Lou Rawls (besides his disco era) and SADE. They are both as smooth as butter.

When we lived in so Cal, we flew to Laughlin, NV one weekend to hear Lou. Laughlin was/is a much more mature venue and many casinos did not allow smoking. Lou Rawls was within arms reach and was charming and personable. I always loved his voice and appreciate hearing him up close and personal.

My wife. Because she told me.

Actually she has a great voice. Her voice singing O' Holy Night is the best I've ever heard. Her range is from Classical/Operatic Soprano to Countertenor Alto.

See I don't think being able to hit a high pitch at a high volume necessarily makes it the greatest voice. Out of your list the only one I would rank near the top is Freddie Mercury.

In no particular order:

Freddy for power (Steve Perry runner up)
Tom Waits for grit
Luther Vandross for smooth control (Michael McDonald or Sinéad O’Connor runner up)

I cannot stand to listen to anything from him or Queen.
Luther's voice is also as smooth as butter.

I buy and sell CD's of many genres though metal, grunge and classic rock sell best. I clean all CD's and try to put them in decent cases. In many instances, I play them to make sure they are good to go if they are not in mint condition or are marred.
There are some cd's that are not at all appealing to me but I grit my teeth and listen on low volume anyways  I try to not sell $hit and keep my customers coming back for more :)

I have a lot and even my old cassettes. Some bootleg from Europe from 1983!
