Who has ordered or is planning to order an Oculus Rift?

At $599, who's interested in Facebook / Oculus' new virtual reality headset? Jump in and try the first generation or wait and let the category mature a bit more?

Not buying right away in any case, but something this new, I'm thinking the second gen might be best. Did you see the HTC debut of what they call the "Chaperone"? Basically, when you get too near a thing in RL, the headset, using it's own cameras, paints that item into your view in scene so you don't kick the baby or ground pound the coffee table.

I never buy anything the second it comes out, especially if it involves a new technology.

But Tilted, I think you should buy it and tell us if it works.

The Giant, who wants every new tech before it even comes out, has passed on it. He's not favorably impressed.

I might have been the only person that enjoyed their virtualboy, so I'm pretty sure I will be jumping on this bandwagon.

Big caveat though; you need a pretty beefy setup and I think my GTX970 is the minimum required. New cards from NVIDIA and AMD are expected this year and for the first time in years they are both doing a process shrink (from 28nm to 14/16 [GF/TSMC]) and will be using HBM. If you wait 8 months or so you should be able to buy a much faster card that consumes considerably less wattage, and you will have had enough time for the Oculus and the HTC/Valve headsets to both be heavily evaluated by the industry.
