Who knew that the Pope was a movie critic?

I heard that the Pope's quote regarding this picture was "It is as it was."

While that's not a "rave review," if you consider the Pope to be the ultimate authority on Christianity (which I don't, actually, but that's another thread) then that statement is high praise.

Of course, JPII has to walk a fine line when it comes to whether he will endorse something like this, because whatever he says comes over as the official position of the Catholic Church.

While the Pontiff apparently has no official position on the film, here is an interesting aspect of the article.

"After a series of screenings in Rome, several top Vatican officials praised the film and rejected complaints by some Jewish leaders who say the film suggests the Jews were responsible for the crucifixion.

Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos said after a screening in September that "I would like all Catholic priests in the world to see this film. I hope that all Christians can see it, everyone in the world." "

I look forward to seeing it.
