Why are Manhole covers round?

depends on the type of manhole you are covering. Some larger vaults have square swing up doors. Since most manholes are made from cylidrical concrete shapes to have equal strength in all directions the round tops only seem natural. Plus a round cover is much easier to line up when you close the man hole. That is just my experience with turd chasin. ans I think I know my sh!t

Actually, there are non-round shapes called Figures Of Constant Breadth that also can't fall into their own hole. They're not used for manhole covers because they'd be more expensive to manufacture. http://kmoddl.library.cornell.edu/math/2/
