Why are we paying for new schools in Charles?

In September a Thomas Stone High School student was killed in P.G. County on her way to school in Waldorf. Her daddy lives in Upper Marlboro, her mon in Oxon Hilll. The Independent story quoted classmates and teachers who remembered her many years as a student in Chuck County. Turns out she lives with mom in Oxon Hill and had been robbing the Chuck County taxpayers for years.

A single-parent friend, who was born and raised in Chuck County had a daughter (also born and raised in Chuck County) who needed to change schools to be nearer the daughter's grandparents who provide after-school care. The vice principal at the school near g'ma's house said he couldn't take the daughter 'cause he has just accepted 10 P.G. county students. When my friend pressed the button at Richmond's office, he elected to admit the girl to the desired school rather than explain why the classes were too stuffed with non-Chuck County students.

My question to the School board and Dr. Richmond is "Why can't you tell us how many P.G. County students are attending Chuck County schools and forcing us to pay higher property taxes to build more and more schools?" Why should the taxpayers blindly accept higher property taxes when the school board cannot assure us we're not being robbed by P.G. Countians?

We already know from the police blotter in the Independent that we are paying higher insurance rates 'cause P.G. Countians steal cars anywhere and drop/burn them in Chuck County. They rob us, they assault us, they steal from our schools. How many are really paying $7,000 a year for the privilege of using our higher-quality schools?

How about it, school board? Let's see you give us a full accounting that every student attending our schools are really Chuck County citizens?

I went to PG county schools for 3 years when we lived in Charles County. So I could take advantage of their higher-quality schools. So I guess I'll call it even.

And yes, back then PG had much higher-quality schools than Chuck County.

i wonder what the real numbers are of the kids from PG county attending chuck county....but i doubt those numbers are enough to alter the tax situation...maybe a couple hundred at the most  as a guess...

The county might even be provided with additional Federal funding for taking in those students.

True, they may be getting more money in return for taking on these added students. I could see how that could benefit the school system in Charles County.

We moved from Leonardtown to Lexington Park my Sophmore year in High School. I merely drove the extra miles to attend Leonardtown.

DUSTIN,
A couple hundred students is worth a million and a half $$ each year. It's not chump change we're talking about here!
