What he should have done when he looked out the window and saw strangers trying to get into his house was open the window and ask them what they were doing. They'd have said, "Housekeeping?" and the situation would have been cleared up. Or if they were bad guys, they'd have taken off running, in which case the guy calls the cops and gives a description. What you *don't* do is blast through the door without identifying your target.
If you just want to shoot someone, you sit on the stairs and wait. If they gain entry, then you can shoot them.
