...that a 6 oz chicken breast will satisfy you and kill your hunger pangs, but 6 oz of vegetable sticks and ranch dressing will not? Or even 16 oz of vegetable sticks.

I understand about protein but "they" tell you to eat more fruits and vegetables, yet they are not satisfying and do not fill you up.

You are doing it wrong. Seriously.

When I first *had* to become vegetarian, I was starving all the time and was extremely unsatisfied. Then I learned I was feeding myself wrong.

Certain veggies have vitamins and minerals you need, but they are empty of protein. Other veggies are full of protein and low on other things. You have to actually plan what you are eating in order to be full.

However, if you are dieting, you can snack on raw broccoli, cauliflower, celery and carrots all day long and not gain a pound because you are burning more calories eating the raw produce than you are gaining from eating it.

I wonder if it is the fat in the chicken rather than the protein that makes you feel full..I know the covnentional wisdom is "protein makes you full" but I think that rather than feel full initially, it just makes you feel fuller longer because of the time your body needs to break it down. Fruits and veggies are high in fiber, which bulks in the stomach and actually does cause a physical sense of fullness, but I think the problem is people (ie, me) eat too fast to feel that sensation and let it settle in. Then of course, actual food is more psychologically satisfying than some veggie sticks..which just seem like diet food. If you drink a full glass of water before a meal, that helps as well.

Doing what wrong? I just asked a question.

I thought I answered your question.

You want to feel full on veggies? Then pick the right veggies. You are picking the wrong veggies.

Want to dip? Get Edamame.

Want to snack - eat nuts (almonds, cashews) or sunflower seeds. I bet you won't eat 6 oz of almonds in one sitting. You will be too stuffed to get past a couple of ounces.

Want to make a meal? Use anything made from soybeans (tofu), regular beans, lentils, peas, spinach, artichokes, peanut butter, white potaoes, sweet potatoes. Add whole wheat pasta, or brown rice. Substitute whole wheat flour or cornmeal for white flour.

Just a question...Could it be because vegetables are easier & quicker to digest? As stated above, meat takes longer, so that's why you feel full after eating 6 ounces.

I think it's all in your head. When I give up that big juicy steak in favor of veggies I am still left craving the steak and am unsatisfied by the veggies. But if I eat veggies because I want to I am left completely satisfied.

The hardest part about eating healthy isn't will power it's attitude. The only thing that has worked for me is pretending that I like something until it becomes such a habit that I actually do like it. That's how it worked for me with smoking - I pretended to be happy I was smoke free until I actually was.

Fake it 'til you make it.
