Why?

My dog is strange. She only eats dry food, she doesn't have a problem with eating, just a strange way of doing it. When it's time to eat, she goes to her bowl, gets a mouth full of food, brings it into the dining room, drops it all on the floor and then eats it one at a time, she does this until the bowl is empty. Why in the world does she do this?

Apollo does that. I always think he just wants to eat in the living room where the action is instead of alone in the kitchen. If I'm in the kitchen making coffee or food, then he'll eat out of his bowl.

That's funny, thinking about it, when I feed here while I'm making dinner, she stays at her bowl. My dining room is a clear shot to the living room, thinking she needs to be "where the action is". Makes sense. I've just never seen a dog do that. She is clingy though.

Our son's dog does this too. We thought maybe it's the breed - a herder. Maybe it's an instinctual way of keeping his herd and or food source safe. The other odd thing he does is go to the edge of the property (and generally in less open area) to poop. We just figure it's something to do with the breed.

Pepper used to do this.

One *theory* I read was that in the wild, animals kill their prey and rip off a chunk to take to eat elsewhere.

Then of course, like Vrai said- your dog may want to just be close to you and not want to dine alone!

I notice when I go out to do the scooping I have to go all the way to the fence and just walk the perimeter, nothing in the middle of the yard, that's a good thing.

Mine does this, too, but only one dog does it. The other one lays down to eat with his bowl between his front paws. The first one brings each bite of food over to wherever I am, drops it all, then eats all but the peas and carrots bits - those he leaves on the floor for either the cat to eat or me to step on.

Mine does the same thing. We call her our little Doomsday Prepper because she leaves food in chairs, on the sofa, behind the sofa, in corners, etc. It sounds like a battle field when I vacuum. :ohwell:

Mine just makes a neat little pile, eats one at a time, goes back, gets more, does it again. Takes her an hour to eat her dinner. It's distracting when I'm trying to watch something on TV.

Dogs are dogs. That's why they are dogs.

No need to ask questions - just serve them.

Stinking cats will TELL you what to do. I don't, but I watch the Mrs and daughter cater to that critter....and I have to buy all the junk for them all.....

Sometimes being Dad sucks, but it gets me out of the house, and I can buy ammo at WM running the pet food run.......

Perhaps it's related to "pack behaviour". In the wild, the dog pack hunts and brings down prey. Then each pack member is competing for their share.

You & FF are both right. My dogs do the same thing with their food, and the Vet told me that they do that to insure they get their share of the food. It's a little odd, but CUTE none-the-less.

Never mind, just read the rest of the posts. I guess it does have something to do with an inherited trait. The Captn and Nikki also, when she was alive, try to bury their rawhide treats in the couch or chair. They put it between the sofa cusions and then start trying to cover it by pushing their nose over it. Like they were pushing dirt. Its hysterical. After she does all that hard work, I pull it out and she looks like "Dayum, not again. I hate when she does that.":killingme

I have a cat that does it. He grabs a mouthful of food then carries it a little bit away from the dish, drops it, then eats it. I think it's so he can eat in peace away from the two female cats.

I had a shepherd once that put all her raw hide treats under my pillow, I went to bed one night and there was a biscuit she somehow got and it was as hard as a rock, but she thought it was special enough to hide under my pillow.

My pup buries her Chewies in the Kitty Litter box! EW!!

That's just nasty.
