..What a week here in SOMd for wildlife...
Well, at least for this rehabber!

Tuesday evening:
Captured/rescued a mute swan in Solomon's with sever lead poisoning.
Huge bird!!!!
It will survive!!!!

Later that night:
Picked up a squirrel that folks had keep for 2 weeks and THEN called a rehabber for help because it got sick. Turns out it is not well, most likely die or will have to be put down.. Appears to have been dropped and suffered head trauma shortly before it was turned over...one eye damaged..totally blind..other one bulging out of its head due to swelling in the skull.
So sad...and could have been prevented.

Still Tuesday night:
Picked up 4 tiny 8 day old kittens..momma killed on the road..Humane Society asked me to foster them. ..what is 4 more babies smaller than my baby squirrels?

Got home late Tuesday night.

Wednesday afternoon:
Transported swan and squirrel to Wildlife Rescue.
While enroute, got a call to swing by a house in Mid Ann Arundel county and pick up baby raccoon from an shed.

Then after that got another call to swing by Ann Arundel Animal Control and pick up another 3 trapped baby raccoons.

So now I have one swan, one squirrel, 4 baby raccoons and my 4 baby kittens all in my van with another hour to drive...Oh and poop from a lead poisoned swan stinks!!

Got all cared for at Widlife rescue..and got back on the road by 11:30.pm Finally got home by 2 am Thursday morning..(Yawn!!!)

Thursday:
Kinda quiet..just routine cleaning and feeding of kittens and of 15+ squirrels.

Thursday afternoon, got call for a downed bald eagle in Lusby.
Called in a couple of friends to help with rescue and we went on a wild eagle chase and 30-45 minutes later I was able to safely capture the eagle.
It is now close to 8pm.

I will spare you the details of walking/slugging after a fast running eagle ( unable to fly) thru the woods ..over creeks, thru the creeks and my falling into the creek.

In the end the tired eagle was corned and I was able to capture it without hurting it or doing any damage to its feathers.
It is an adult..white head and tail with talons 1 1/2" to 1 3/4 " long.
I did have someone along to take photos.

Went to another rehabbers house, evaluated eagle and decided to transport right away to Wildlife Rescue. It is now anout 9pm.
Got there at midnight, worked on eagle, and got home again at 3 am.
Eagle is going to be fine, will survive and will be returned to this area for release.!! YEA!!!!

Friday:
Got to bed at 5 am Friday morning after feeding and cleaning babies....
Slept for 4 hours...and thought it was going to be a quiet day..and it was..
Until 7:30..as I was getting ready to go out..

Phone rings...can I go get an downed osprey?
What do I say...no?
Heck no... I adore osprey!!!
Yes, I will go...where?

"Meet DNR police at Wal-Mart LaPlata!!"
Great!!! A clean rescue...I will met them and get osprey from him!!!

Hahaha.......No such luck.

I meet DNR at WalMart and am told I need to follow him to get osprey.

I follow him way down the road, way down the road to a tiny strip of beach and get in a boat...Yup..a boat ride!!!
It is now 10:25pm Friday night...

Take off shoes, leave wallet, cell phone, etc in van (in case I fall in) and take nets, gloves, sheet and get into boat for boat ride up the river.

A few minutes later, in the soft glow of the spot light is a wet, tired looking little osprey sitting on a log at the river bank.
I lay out over the bow, net in hand and reaching out gently slip the net over its body and tip it back...off the log it rolls and I pull in one pissed off, wet osprey into the boat.
I secure it in the sheet and back we go...

I get home at.midnight...
I treat the osprey for shock and set it up for the night.
I feed babies and crawl into bed at 3 am....

Saturday:
The osprey was fiesty, and more alert, and I had a volunteer come over to help me examine it.

Sadly, I discover it has a compound fracture of the distal radius and severed tendons.( I knew when I rescued it, the wing was damaged, just not how extensive).

As a result of the damage, I had to euthanize it.

It was a female, young, most likely her first year up north. She was thin for this time of year.
Beautiful bright yellow eyes, clean talons and pads...Just a nice young girl.
Had she flown an inch away from the tree limb, she would not have smacked her wing and fractured it.

My second osprey of the year...first one was dead by the time I got to it.
It had been in a fight with an eagle over and had several puncture wounds to the chest wall.
And now my second...and It could not be saved.

But for the record, the eagle was my first eagle call as a Master Rehabilitator and my first successful capture/rescue and save!!! WhooooHooooo!!!!!

Here is the eagle:
Second photo, I am holding eagle on its back while another rehabber works on it.
I am wearing heavy duty eagle gloves...good thing!!!

Enjoy!!!
