WASHINGTON COUNTY, MD (June 9, 2023) - A Williamsport man was flown to a Washington DC area hospital after a kitchen fire broke out in his home Friday afternoon, and his wife is credited with saving his life.

At around noon, firefighters from Williamsport Volunteer Fire Company and surrounding companies responded to a house fire at 10729 Hoffman Drive. When they arrived, firefighters discovered heavy fire throughout the one-story rancher. It took around 70 firefighters 45 minutes to control the two-alarm fire.

Investigators with the Office of the State Fire Marshal determined items left on top of the stove ignited after the 76-year-old male owner turned on the stovetop and walked away. After discovering the fire, he tried to extinguish it; however, heavy smoke overcame him, and he collapsed. His wife arrived home and discovered the fire, along with her husband, and she was able to pull him out before the fire engulfed the house.

Investigators later learned his wife had called him a few minutes before she got home and asked him to preheat the oven. However, he inadvertently turned on the stovetop.

Paramedics treated the victim after sustaining 14 percent burns on various parts of his body. He was subsequently flown to the Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center by Maryland State Police Aviation Command, where he is listed in stable condition.
