Windows 8 HELP!!

So I got my inlaws a new computer back around December. They're in their 70's and mostly use it to play solitaire and send a few emails (and my MIL reads facebook). My FIL never did get the hang of WIN 8 (I can't blame him) and they had friend "fix it" for them. Well, my MIL got a tablet last month for her birthday and my FIL couldn't figure out how to connect to the router, so he figured the best thing to do was just reset the computer to factory settings. I'm sure somehow this makes sense to him....

Of course there's no backup, no disc, and no idea what was downloaded. I think I remember someone mentioning in the forums that there is an app to make WIN 8 act like Win 7. Anyone know what it is? I'm going to be in the area (NJ) on Wednesday, and they're expecting me to come over and save the day. I'd appreciate anyone who can send me in the right direction.

I'm also going to have to figure out how to keep his grubby hands off this sort of thing, but still allow him to do updates.

running the restore partition is usually an F9 type function when the computer is booting up .... the BIOS will flash 'press F9 to run system restore' or F9 can be the boot menu

Well, I finally made it up to my in-laws. Things weren't as bad as I had been told - it turns out the computer was running just fine for them, but the real tragedy was that my MIL couldn't log into her mail on her own account. Somehow her connection was set to a nonexistent proxy setting. Took about 5 minutes of investigating to figure that out and set her right and then change the network setting on the printer from 'everyone' to just them.

However, I was surprised how slow this new computer was running - until I ran a quick malwarebytes scan and found 937 (yes, 937) items that needed to be quarantined. Hard to believe on a computer that's barely 6 months old. I'm pretty sure it's all the "churchlady links" my MIL clicks on....anyway, I got a relative who stops by the house every couple of weeks promise to run a scan and quarantine anything it finds until I can get up there again.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
